The food is always good. This time we ate in instead of delivery. Hot tea with our meal was nice on this very cold day. The water tasted like it came out of a garden hose though. The bathroom smelled like a sewer. Not so sure we'll be revisiting. Time to find a new go-to Chinese place, perhaps. Unless things change.

Convenient to the Harlem Ave stop of the BNSF Metra line may be it's best feature. Just off Harlem Ave it is a reasonable place for Chinese food. A bit heavy on the salt. Plenty of variety on the menu. The eggrolls were nice and crispy, and fresh. Not the best place, but it will fit what you need. The place does need some repair (don't lean back too hard in the booths).

Chef Shangri-La

Delicious food & tropical drinks served in a festive space with a tiki bar & live entertainment.

Polynesian/Tiki-hut decor throughout the restaurant and the bar makes this a different venue from your standard Chinese restaurant. Food is good, somethings better than others but nothing bad at all (for example the moo-shu pork was great, but the orange chicken a little too sweet - for my taste at least - but everything well prepared). The pu-pu platter at $17.95 might seem pricey but there is a LOT of food on it: 2 large egg rolls, four huge crab rangoon, four tempura-like fried shrimp, four "lava" chicken wings (kind of spicy sauce but not scorchingly hot) and four delicious marinated and grilled beef skewers. Very tasty and tender and not at all chewy. Service is pleasant and efficient, they have a full bar. Several items on the extensive menu aren't available anymore so there is a large black line drawn through those. Kind of tacky but considering the cost of printing menus like this I supposed it's fine. There was even some kind of Peruvian-Chinese fusion dish on the menu; I don't remember what it was exactly but it seemed interesting and maybe I'd try that. As you'd expect, there are dozens of tropical drinks available, most of them alcohol-based. Beware, though -- the descriptions, although "pretty", don't really tell you what's all in the drinks. For example the listing for Zombie has the phrase "rum blend". Anyone familiar with this drink (and a scorpion, etc.) will know they're made of many types of rum usually including a 151+ proof rum. Very strong. The menu does state "No Frozen Drinks" so if you're looking for a frozen dacquiri or a mudslide this isn't the place to have those. There is a large fish pond in the dining area which is interesting and some of the tables are covered "bamboo palapa style" with various South Seas Islands decoration. Sometimes, a theme restaurant relies too much upon its unusual decor to make up for lackluster food, but everything I've had here has been good. Plenty of free parking in their lot. There are slot machine/gaming machines available in the bar area for those so inclined to play them but the sound doesn't filter into the restaurant. There used to be a small Polynesian-type show performed on weekend but I don't know if they still do that or when those might be, so call the restaurant for the info. Definitely an old school throwback experience but Chef Sangri-La doesn't disappoint.
