Had the 4 course meal tonight and it was spectacular! Asparagus and shrimp salad, smoked meat cream soup, beef medallions and strawberries with whipped cream and Ice cream. Finally an espresso. Every course was perfectly presented and scrumptious. The atmosphere was lovely. There were many local families eating and playing cards. The hostess was great but only spoke German. The chef was friendly and entertaining. He spoke in German, English and was also fluent in Spanish. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed conversing in Spanish with him. A great place to enjoy a meal.

We had dinner at Restaurant Hof on our one night in Appenzell. Like everything in Switzerland, it wasn't cheap. The service was pleasant and the food was pretty good. Only disappointment was my rosti which was swimming in cheese and was quite greasy. The rest of the food was very nice though.

My wife and I picked this place after stopping by to see the menu. When we were doing that a waitress walked by with a wonderful looking bowl of macaroni and cheese. I had the grilled Appenzeller sausage called Lanfsgemeindeschublig. The sausage came with the aforementioned Mac and Cheese which was better than it looked! Might be the best I have ever eaten. My wife had the Veal Cordon Bleu which was also very good. Would definitely eat here again.

This was a great experience, from the gondola type ride up to the summit and the meal itself. Please be sure to see the tip at the end.When you arrive to Bruelisau you buy your ticket (half price if you have a rail pass). You board the gondola and hear some great Swiss music. On the ride up you will see beautiful, sweet Swiss cows grazing and some other sites. Once at the top, you will be surrounded by incredible mountain vistas. It is peaceful and relaxing. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view if you do not want to eat at the restaurant.They have a casual dining option and a more formal revolving restaurant. I ate the formal one and the meal was outstanding. I had a veal dish and it was served with noodles and a spectacular mix of fresh vegetables. Bread was also included and it was yummy! But even if your meal is not as good as mine, the view is breathtaking! They do take reservations and if you are going at a popular dining time, you may want to make them.Tips: If staying in Appenzell, whether you drove into Appenzell or took the train (like I did), I recommend using the 5 Euro Public Car to take you and pick you up. First of all, the drive seems difficult. If you want wine with your meal I know I sure would NOT want to drive back from Bruelisau with any alcohol in my system. The public cars can be arranged by calling: 0848 55 30 60. Also...the restaurant only takes CREDIT CARDS with a PIN/CHIP and the formal one can be expensive. Make sure you have enough cash. I would count on 60 Euros per person if drinking wine. If not, best to plan 25-30.

Auf einer Rundwanderung von und nach Appenzell sind wir hier eingekehrt - und das war eine sehr gute Entscheidung. Eingerahmt von wiederkäuenden Kühen und Bergen konnten wir draussen sitzen und eine Rösti mit Bratwurst geniessen. Mit Appenzeller Getränken kombiniert einen Halt wert.Die Bedienung war sehr freundlich, die Kapelle nebenan sehr ansprechend und anders als andere Kirchen, und die Ambiance des Ortes hat gut getan.Wir kommen gerne wieder!

right across our Hotel Appenzell during the 2018 Landsgemeinde we spent the evening at the Santis. Very typical dinner lounge on the first floor, a lively crowd of visitors and local politicians discussing the votes, we had a nice local specialties dinner, soup mixed salad and sausages. friendly service and good wine list. We decided not to bother with the lunch crowds at Aescher and had a very enjoyable lunch here instead. Pommel frites or hot fresh crispy and absolutely delicious, as were the bratwurst and the house made delicious apple sauce. Very efficient service. Nice views of the valley below

On our second night in Appenzell we chose another Rick Steves recommended restaurant, this time the Cafe-Hotel Appenzell. With the weather cooperating, we sat out for dinner and as they were celebrating asparagus season, I had cream of asparagus soup and my wife and I both had the special of chicken breast over white and green asparagus, which was heavenly! Luckily we both managed to fit in dessert as well; mine was a very creamy Tiramisu. I would recommend Cafe-Hotel Appenzell most highly. As many of the eateries we ate at, they try to use local produce.

Facilities in this modernized and upper class hotel are great, as is food. The rooms were well-equipped. The pool is fantastic and there are many outdoor activities to take advantage of in this beautiful area. Do bear in mind that this hotel also serves as a high-class rehab centre with the corresponding clientelle.
