Find out what Central European restaurants to try in Debrecen. Debrecen (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈdɛbrɛt͡sɛn] ( listen)) is Hungary's second largest city after Budapest. It is the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region and the seat of Hajdú-Bihar county. If you really want to enjoy a Sunday afternoon in the Hungarian countryside then you must visit this restaurant. The decoration, atmosphere and even the surrounding "if you choose to dine outside" is a truly enjoyable experience. The food is tasty and of adequate proportions, price wise it is very acceptable. You must remember however that this is in no way fine dining, and if you dont mind a couple of stains on the table cloth, a slightly worn out kitchen utensils, or even some dust on the furniture, then you will probably enjoy it....it is all part of the experience.

The original Restaurant in Nyirbator (which I visited several years ago) used to serve mainly Pizza and Pancakes. However now it has opened in Debrecen there is a full Menu. The place is clean and welcoming, as are the Staff. There is a wide variety of food for a Main meal, and a very reasonable Daily Special. Also wonderful Icecreams and Hungarian Cakes. It is a bit away from the City Centre, but right next to the InterSpar shopping complex, so plenty of free parking.

The portions served were humungous and the main course was delicious. Compared to British prices it was an absolute bargain. This was let down by the desserts. Only two of the four of us eating wanted dessert because we were stuffed from the main course and beer. Three desserts were delivered to the table and although huge portions, we found them a bit bland and tasteless. One was a cheesecake, I can't remember the other one. Service was a bit hit and miss possibly due to the language barrier. I'd recommend this restaurant for the main courses but maybe give the dessert menu a miss.

What a place, such an excellent staff, and the best of all these absolutely delicious Hungarian wines. Made by young wine makers, you can taste all these good vibes! The staff gave us every opportunity to taste and such good advice, really people who are passionate about their jobs. Such a marvel to discover this bar! And the best thing is, there are more of them, one in Budapest waiting to be discovered! Let's go!

We visited twice and were happy with our meals both times. The ingredients were always fresh, tasty, and nicely presented. The Debrecen sausages were outstanding, grilled chicken was so tender and tasty, wedding soup and garlic soup excellent. The service was good until we needed the check. Both times we waiting an extraordinarily long time for it to arrive. In fact the first time I got up and went in the building to hunt it down. I think paying in cash disrupts their system. They did have an English version menu available. Would happily eat here again.

Now, dear reader, some of us like to sample a beer or two on our evenings out. This can (I am told) lead to a desire to eat and be merry. Belga is a perfect location to pursue these ideals. The beer menu is nothing short of remarkable, both in its detail and also the breadth of its selection on tap. It is a teensy bit pricey for Hungary, but as a treat is a worthwhile investment. The staff are lovely, courteous and knowledgable about their fare. There is a charming seating area outside the front of the restaurant in the main plaza, where, as we found there is often live music on a Saturday night. Food wise the menu is excellent with dishes to suit all dietary needs. We started with the Pork ragout soup, then ventured into both local signature dishes. The portion sizes were perfect, not too big, but equally not attempting "Nouvelle Cuisine".Debrecen offers visitors the opportunity to move from venue to venue in a small area, but for those who like to settle and enjoy the cafe culture and ambience, Belga is a tough act to beat.

Underground/basement facility. Nice ambiance. Friendly staff that knew almost enough English. We had a light dinner, Chicken soup, salad with grilled cheese, the cold raspberry soup, stuffed cabbage with sausage finished with the sour cherry crepe (w/ ice cream). All pretty good. The cold raspberry soup as a starter was interesting. Good, but not used to starting the meal with something sweet. The chicken soup had chicken broth, but no meat. Really vegetable soup made with chicken broth. But that's ok. Cabbage rolls and the salad were great. Sausage was very nice. The crepe was delightful. Overall, a good place for traditional food. English menus. Small parking lot. Small, but serviceable wine list.
