Reviews on Central American food in Panajachel, Western Highlands, Guatemala. Panajachel (Spanish pronunciation: [panaxaˈtʃel], Pana) is a town in the southwestern Guatemalan Highlands, less than 90 miles from Guatemala City, in the department of Sololá. It serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding municipality of the same name. The elevation is 1,597 metres (5,240 ft). Population was 11 thousand in the 2000 census, estimated as 15,000 now (Insituto Nacional de Estadística de Guatemala), and has approximately doubled each of the last few decades. The town of Panajachel is located on the Northeast shore of Lake Atitlán, and has become a centre for the tourist trade of the area as it provides a base for visitors crossing the lake to visit other towns and villages.
Things to do in Panajachel
I go to the Ulsan Pizzeria every time I am in Panajachel, often for more than one meal. They have an excellent variety of Guatemalan dishes and serve plates with local specialities such as Mojarra (a fish found only in Lake Atitlan). They also have foods familiar to those from the US, such as pizza, pasta, and pancakes. They serve breakfast all day which is a plus if you are traveling with picky eaters. The majority of their plates are under Q50 with many meals available for under Q30. My personal favorites are the burros mixtos, the supremo omelet and the sopa de zanahorias.

A small Tiki-Shack setting at the top of Santander and Calle Principal. The Curry Chicken and Vegetarian sandwiches are very tasty and filling. Freshly made, the owner clearly is proud of the quality of his fare. We certainly appreciated the new options. There are always drink prices, and delivery is available direct to your hotel/address for only the Q5 cost of the tuk tuk that delivers it.

I ate here once for breakfast and once for dinner. Breakfast was pretty standard. They offered the usual- eggs, beans, oatmeal, pancakes. It was fine. For dinner, they were able to accommodate our large group with a reservation. The service was great! They have an okay menu. I got the pepian, which was delicious! Everyone else enjoyed their food, too. There isn't anything too unique on their menu, but it's a solid choice for dinner. They do not serve any alcohol.

A Graduate- run restaurant located in the CECAP vocational center building in the town of Santa Cruz la Laguna. It is part of a yearlong culinary arts program that trains local indigenous youth in food preparation and service. Open from 8am to 5pm Monday
The views from the rooftop cafe at CECAP are stunning, but the vista is just the beginning. The food is by far the best I've had in Central America! We got two different typical Guatemalan dishes; both had rich sauces and layered flavors, and the presentation was beautiful. For a backpacker who doesn't eat at fancy restaurants because they're out of my budget, this was a real treat - it's an excellent value. My favorite thing about this restaurant is that they reuse old jars and food containers for takeaway containers - I wish more places would do that. The businesses in Santa Cruz care a lot about reducing the amount of waste produced in the area, and this is a brilliant way to help do just that. You can take a tuk tuk up the hill for 5Q, but the walk is quite nice, especially after hiking volcanoes. Very highly recommended! Thanks for visiting us and supporting CECAP! We're so glad you had such a good visit. Come back again soon!

Had a good night out at Pana Rock as we enjoyed the live music and happy hour drinks. Ended up having breakfast here the day after (needed quick wifi) and that was rather disappointing. Took a long time and food itself was only so so. Conclusion; great for a night out but eat somewhere else.

We ate here for dinner and the food was delicious and service was great! They have live music some nights. We all enjoyed our steaks and they have a delicious chimichurri sauce. The prices are reasonable.

Visited here every night of my stay in Panajachel! Usually for a beer early evening when it was busy and full of locals - great chance to chat and practice your Spanish! Everyone is very friendly and the owner is fantastic. Also came later on my last night to try the pupusas and - wow! Instantly regretted that I hadn't been eating here every night! They are cooked fresh to order, totally delicious and lots of choice! I'm vegetarian so tried a spinach one and a carrot one - both totally delicious! There is a minimum order of 2, but they are only 10 GTQ each and 2 is already very filling and great value.Totally recommended!

This restaurant is not cheap compared to other option on the main street in Pana, however, the quality they offer is superb and overall it is a good value for money and an exquisite alternative to barbecue meat which you cannot eat every day I guess. Very good also for breakfast. Try it, you wonât be disappointed. Service is also very good and attentive.
