I stupidly thought I quickly hop in for a cappuccino and a fresh orange juice after I'd done my groceries. One of my pet hates in South Africa; that it's impossible to order from the 'front of house' staff that show you to your table. If you even TRY to order something from them (I don't need the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted) they look at you as if you just insulted them to the bone and smugly mention 'I will send you your waitress immediately'.I'm fine with that as such, but our interpretation of 'immediately' is clearly not the same.10 minutes and some wild waving later, I was rescued by a table next to me who saw me choking (having a bad cold and desperately needing my coffee and orange juice, asap PLEASE) and they actually tackled THEIR waitress who eventually showed up...she gave me one -friendly mind you, the only one in the angry looking crowd! I wish she would have been my waitress- look and told me 'I will send you YOUR waitress'. Now this specimen was seemingly as hard to find as the last rhino on earth, but eventually only 5 minutes later a waitress with a look that could have killed me, showed up. Between coughing I asked her if I could please have a cappuccino and an orange juice, and if possible asap please as I am choking to death as you can see thank you?For the record, it was early morning, it wasn't busy, and the waitresses/waiters were mainly busy standing around chatting, ignoring any arriving guests as much as possible, they were doing a great job at that must say, I saw a couple of tables leaving actually while the 'front of house' Madame was standing at her pole position, staring in the vague blissfully unaware of her surroundings. Bonus, I got my orange juice within 2 minutes sharp and could stop coughing, I thanked the table next to me who made this possible. 10 minutes later (after some more frantic waving and -I know this is sacrilege how DARE I bother her during her most important high level duties?- walking up to the front of house Madame, I also got my coffee. Yeeeeah! Paying the bill became another drama, so eventually -I had now been there for 45 minutes mind you- just walked up to the till and paid, left a generous tip of .20 cents, too much if you ask me but couldn't be bothered to ask for the change, here you go girl, you'll go far in your career I am sure of it. Who thinks the 'supervisor' is actually supervising anything?? Never.again. Go to Mugg & Bean, friendly & quick service

My wife and I came here for Sunday lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the tranquility of this garden restaurant (after some ladies and their noisy children had left). The menu is very middle of the road homely South African fare at very reasonable prices. Fantastic food and coffees. Their baked goods are always fresh and scrumptious. My boyfriend had The Full Monty croissant which he loved and I had the Croquet Madam which was amazing. Very satisfying and filling. Something a bit different to the usual types of breakfasts. The staff are friendly and attentive. It's quite popular over the weekend so you du wait a bit for your food, but it's still within a reasonable time and waiter communicates this with you beforehand, and it's well worth wait for great, fresh meals.

My colleagues and I work very close by and snobs is becoming a very pleasant, popular and frequent outing for us. Been here three times and loved the food every time. The waiters are polite. Portions are definitely good and food is delicious. It's avergely priced. The coffee is so worth it. Coffee options are innovative with selections like Vietnamese iced (one of my favourite things ever after having travelled to Vietnam and what a joy that I could find it back home!) And Rommochino. Hot chocolates are decadent and cake slices might be the size of a small arm! There are not many coffee shops in the area that working people can easily sneak in and out of during the day, so this is a nice retreat. Will definitely be coming back here sometime next week.

Cosy coffee shop serving breakfast, lunch and wonderful cakes. Licenced too. Pretty garden outside and toasty fire inside for those chilly winter days. Reasonably priced, with friendly, efficient service. Car parking.

Being gluten intolerant Chelsea cafe is my go-to coffee shop. I know I can have do many things on the menu: cake, wraps, salad etc.I always enjoy it. The cloudless chocolate cake is always delicious. I just have two suggestions:1.) The cream with the cloudless cake is getting much less. If used to be a nice big dollop but now it's tiny. The cake needs the cream to balance the richness. Don't skimp.2) the gluten free berry Cheese cake seems to have changed. Is the recipe different? I used to have it every time but the last two times it tasted terrible. The first time it was bland and the second it tasted like it had been made with goats cheese. Please go back to the original recipe. It was the best.Otherwise I love this place and bring all my friends here. Keep up the good work.

A sexy eatery in the heart of Somerset West. Your crossover between business & social. Food|Wine & A Mighty Good Time.
Fred & Max has, unfortunately, changed hands. Neither of the two original owners are involved in the establishment anymore and it is very obvious that this is the case. A friend and I had breakfast at Fred & Max last week. I cannot complain about the food at all - we both had a breakfast bowl and it is difficult to get muesli, yogurt and fruit wrong. However, the service was extremely slow. Now, as Capetonians we are used to a more laid back approach to life, but the service was so slow that I was afraid that we may still be at the restaurant when Christmas rolled by! The competition in Somerset West in this market segment is getting tougher by the day, so I hope that the new owners can sort out the service issue, otherwise they will find that regular visitors may go elsewhere.

There is a good selection of food for breakfast, brunch and snacks with a wide choice of cool drinks, teas and coffees. The food comes freshly cooked and the service is delightful.Hi Chris.
