It is the administrative and industrial centre of the homonymous Smolyan Province. The town is situated in the valley of the Cherna ("Black") and the Byala ("White") Rivers in the central Rhodopes at the foot of the mountains' highest part south of the popular ski resorts Pamporovo and Chepelare. As of February 2011, it has a population of 30,283 inhabitants.

4 of us were staying in the Ribkata hotel across the road (nice place I may add), and all went for dinner at this restaurant. The terrace setting beside the lake is beautiful and relaxing, especially watching the different reflections in the water as the light changes, and listening to the chirping frogs in the water below. The menu had plenty of options, food was all excellent, good portions, tasty and good value. Service was prompt and friendly.

Don't go there. The attitude of all the staff is just awful. And when we tried to complain about it, they just went more vulgar and aggressive. I can't believe places like this exist. We had to experience this unacceptable behavior from all of them (Viki - waitress, "Joro" - the "manager" and the other waiter that we just couldn't understand the name of. You will make yourself a huge favour if you don't visit.

We had a short snack, tee, coffee and one of my friends borrowed ski from them. The equipment was much cheaper than elsewhere and there a lots of guys helping out and they have been very friendly and polite. Thumbs up for this place
