We found Palo Santa Grill & Restaurante and were super lucky to have done so. The food was incredible - ceviche and and the shared seafood appetizer were loved by all and the seafood fettuccine was a great choice. The hamburger was perfection - and substantial. Panza llena - corazon contento. The restaurant is beautiful and just a few feet from the main road but feels secluded and has a view that will make you feel as if you are on a Finca far from town. The service was impeccable and our waiter Alfonso was accommodating and charming. All in all the family agreed this was the best meal weâve enjoyed in Costa Rica.

Coffee and fresh juice. French croissants and pastries. You have a lot of different ingredients to make your own sandwich, salad and pasta. We cook with fresh produce to have a good quality and use recyclable packaging to protect the nature.
Good choices. Large burgers and excellent croissants with a number of choices on what you would like to add. Quite popular and full around lunch hour. Not a lot of seating but people are respectful of those waiting for tables. Also baked goods are excellent. Owners are from France and living in Atenas. Good for families as well

Contenedor is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner. The menu is fairly small but offers choices for every palette. From vegetarian options to grilled chicken, beef, or pork dishes and wraps to sushi to the nachos (tico style) to the HUGE cheeseburger served on a homemade ciabatta bun, you will not be disappointed. Everything is a personal recipe from the owner/chef and very tasty. The desserts are excellent, especially the passion fruit cheesecake. The prices can't be beat either; very reasonable. As you travel from the airport towards the Pacific coast, stop into Palmares (30km from the airport) for a wonderful treat. Take the Palmares exit, turn right onto the main street. A couple blocks after the Maxi Pali you will see the black and white sign(the word"Con" with a picture of a fork") of Contenedor on the right side of the road. Enjoy!

Kay's Gringo Postres roughly translated means Kay's NorthAmerican Sweets. Kay and her husband, Tom, from South Dakota, started out as a tiny pastry and coffee shop and grew into the only place in Atenas and for miles around that serves real American soul
I visited Atenas with my girlfriend on our now third trip here and weâre told about a Polish Cafe/Restaurant near by. Being Polish I had to try it out. My girlfriend Allison and I popped in one afternoon and met Ania the owner who is originally from Poland, lived in Toronto and now has moved to Costa Rica with her husband and two kids about two years ago. She said they bought Kayâs and cleaned it up, changed the menu and itâs a brand new place now. Thereâs a great menu with tons of choices for breakfast and lunch. Lots of Gringo choices and also a traditional Polish menu page. They have home made iced tea (sweetened or unsweetened) which is fantastic and refreshing which we had. Our first trip there I tried the Hungarian pancake which is a beef stew wrapped in a potato pancake and comes with 2 sides. Allison has the Cabbage Rolls. Both amazing. We came back a second time with Allisons parents and two of their friends and had Cabbage Stew and the schnitzel which was fantastic and had an egg on top. Before leaving Atenas Allison and I came back a third time to say farewell to Ania and the great ladies who work in the kitchen with her and had pirogies and a Polish sausage. Everything we tried was so authentic and brought me back to my childhood. It tasted exactly like the food my mom used to make. Thereâs also a huge English book library that lines the inside walls of the restaurant if you want something to read. I canât say enough great things about this place. The food, service, quality, pricing..... everything was absolutely fantastic. Go and try it....

Wow, what can I say. This is seriously an incredible find. From all the places we ate in San Jose, Milá was simply the best. They have an incredible selection of wines, healthy salads, great sandwiches, special chefs coming in once a week, excellent coffee (hardly a given these days anymore) and to boot, at excellent prices.Couldn't recommend this place more warmly.

El Balcon is a fun place to come sit on the porch and watch the world go by. They offer a wide range of sandwichs and many good German dishes like schnitzel and spicey sausages. Also if you have a sweet tooth they have many pasteries and ice cream offerings including chocolate iced mocha along with sundaes and many fun desserts. They make their own breads daily and are always busy. Note that they do close at 6pm.

Crissy and I stopped pretty much every morning after our walk downtown--to get ready for the walk back. If we were not getting their superb coffee we were getting the best varieties of lemon aide on the planet. We also ate lunch there a few times and their salads are so fresh and tasty. It is also a place to meet ex-pats like our new friends Dave and Marcia who helped us considerably with our questions. Do your self a favor go enjoy yourself and look out on the town square and Church and people watch. Trey
