Chagford is a very relaxed village with plenty of options for excellent food. The Birdcage is no exception. Great selection of food, and happy to cater for Vegan/Vegetarians. Although a little cozy inside, enough room to have a relaxing lunch. Service was very friendly and reasonably priced.

A selection of modern British and authentic continental and Mediterranean, all homemade and locally produced wherever possible, alongside a mouth-watering selection of freshly made cakes and pastries, not to mention the famous Devonshire Cream Tea! To dri
Lovely small café/restaurant, with some appealing art and a very pleasant welcome. Food is freshly cooked, good coffee, and the absolutely delicious cakes and pastries are baked by the ownerâs husband. Itâs sometimes hard to get in, because it is much loved by Devon locals. So if you plan to detour for breakfast/lunch/cream tea (weâd happily stay for all three) do call to book.

Our Devon cafe and farm shop offers you delicious home-baked cakes and pastries. Enjoy a cake and a coffee, or maybe a light lunch. Relax in a friendly Devon atmosphere and watch cows or sheep grazing contentedly. Our fresh produce has really low food mil
Lady serving/cooking went out of her way to provide a nice lunch for the two of us. Lovely side salad with beetroot and pasta as well as the bits you'd normally expect, delicious warm bread rolls, quiche stuffed full of filling, all at a very reasonable price. Plus a range of cakes and desserts if desired. We paid just over £10 for two cold but generous lunches plus drinks. Definitely recommend.

We are a large group of friends (20 +) who have spent 30 years plus staying in large properties and, wherever possible, supporting local eateries. We called in for coffee and cakes and saw the evening meal option. Despite the modest surroundings we booked a group meal for later in our stay. Quite simply : wow !! The quality of food presented by Ashley and Harriet would have graced any high range restaurant. My mushroom starter included quality chanterellles and was so tasty. One of our group declared the squid the best she had ever had. My turbot on a bed of crushed potato was perfectly cooked and the overall presentation was of a standard that was outstanding. The superlatives continued with a superb coconut cheesecake. Each and every one of our group (19 diners) were blown away by the standard of the food served here. I cannot believe that Ashley is self-taught. The quality and flavours of food and presentation would ordinarily suggest a high end chef trained background. Take your own alcohol meant a very reasonable price for a truly great meal.Thank you for such a wonderful review. We are both really pleased that each and everyone of you enjoyed your meal with us. It was a pleasure having you all and hope to see you on your next return to the area. Ash and Harriet

We were on a long drive down to Penzance from Reading and had left early so after 3 hours of traveling we were ready to stop for breakfast. The garden centre is literally just seconds off the A30. We were made very welcome by all the staff. The restaurant was clean and tidy. One of us ordered the full cooked breakfast (£7.50). This was delicious, good quality produce, thick bacon, tasty sausage, good portion size. The other two of us ordered scrambled eggs on toast. There was a choice of one slice or two. Feeling greedy we both ordered two. Wow! The plates arrived promptly -two slices of chunky wholemeal toast and a mountain of the most delicious looking scrambled egg I have ever seen! The eggs were sooooo tasty, a very deep orange colour, obviously very fresh. It was such a plateful and so tasty. When our plates were cleared I mentioned to the lady how amazing it had been and asked her how many eggs each of us had had. She replied SIX! Six large eggs each! Felt extremely greedy after that! I would definitely recommend this coffee shop for breakfast! There was also the most amazing choice of fresh cakes, all looking very home-made. Obviously we simply did not have room for these unfortunately! We just may have to stop here on the journey back! So glad to hear you all enjoyed your breakfast. I hope you have a lovely holiday in Penzance and we do see you on the way back - however just to let you know we are not allowed to open on Easter Sunday - but we are open every other day. Jane

Popped in with my partner before going across the road to visit the foundry. Mug of tea good. Cake good as was my partners cream tea but sadly we thought a lot of things lacked. There was no conversation with the lady who did the food in fact, we weren't even asked if we were ready to order we had to sumise that "she" was ready to take our order as she leaned on the food counter with her pad! The man who runs it was there Manning the shop part but even he didn't acknowledge that we were there when he came over to speak to her. The son (roughly 13) popped into the shop from upstairs with so is on and no shoes! Not a good look when you're trying to eat! Shop was not very well stocked and looked sparse, such a shame as the outside promised a quaint little village tea room but would have got better response ie: friendly conversation, had we visited Lldls!

We were looking for a quick sandwich & followed the Services sign just off A30 nr Okehampton & saw it was a petrol station with a huge stand up Costa cup at the entrance We felt really disappointed but turned in prepared to turn round & come straight out again & found a large car park and sign for "Whitehouse Restaurant" We parked in a disabled space really close to entrance & to our amazement it was a lovely clean, friendly & efficient restaurant in lovely surroundings. had prawn sandwiches with crisps & salad garnish, my partner had steak pasty, we both had milk shake. It was all very good & my partner remarked several times that the steak pasty was even better than from a Cornish pasty shop we always head for on arrival in Hayle. This was the best steak pasty he had ever had! Plenty of meat in every bite & lovely pastry etc. we complemented them on the pasty & were told that they do in fact completely make the whole thing there.Amazing to find a completely independent restaurant just off the main Devon/Cornwall road and just signposted 'Services'. I'm sure they would get more well deserved custom if they were able to signpost that it isn't just the usual company services but independent. Meals included roasts & a good table menu to look at. We thoroughly recommend this place, no negatives at all, so glad we found it. Will certainly stop there again. In fact as we live in Devon we might even make a special trip. Thank you for breaking the mold of the usual expected Services.
