Here you can enjoy excellent Japanese tea, or âochaâ in Japanese, in a nostalgic atmosphere created by the architectural style of the building which was once a quarantine office during the Meiji era, and now known as one of the few remaining structures in Japan dating back to the Meiji era in the Port of Hakodate.Enjoying the view of the ocean over a cup of ocha, combined with the atmosphere of the building was quite a peaceful and relaxing experience for me.As you enter the cafe the view of the ocean straight ahead down the hallway will literally catch your breath. The squeaking sounds the floor makes as you walk toward your table will remind you of the age of the building. These sensory stimuli caught by your eyes and ears will set a perfect stage for you to enjoy the taste and the scent of ocha you are about to encounter, inviting you to mobilize all your senses.First time to try ocha? Donât worry. A friendly waiter will serve ocha into your cup when your ocha has reached the optimum temperature. Although the second serving is for you to do yourself, they will explain how to do it to help you make the best ocha.I am sure you will all enjoy both the atmosphere and the taste of ocha.

Housed in a historical old building, easy to locate. Lovely interior decor English menu available and owner (Hiroshi)can communicate in basic English, and even gave us more tips on where else to go in Hakodate. We ordered the matcha and sencha sets which were lovely. Cakes and pudding in the set were not too sweet, and very delicate. Must go :) Cosy place to chill out

A lot of fellow Taiwanese bloggers rave about Snaffle's, but I really did not share the same passion. We stopped by the location near JR Hakodate Station to pick up some mille-feuille crepe cake and strawberry short cake as well as a box of the famous cheesecake omelet. Upon returning to our hotel, we realized that the sales lady did not pack any utensils for us so we had to eat messy cakes with our hands (of all the bakeries that we visited in Japan on our many trips, Snaffle's was the ONLY one that did not pack utensils for take-out orders). As for the cheesecake omelet, let's just say that my husband and I each had a bite and then toss the box down the garbage. I preferred the double fromage at Le Tao at Otaru much, much more!
This is a very pleasant cafe situated in a beautiful park that would catch all the seasonal changes. There are many cherry trees which must look spectacular in the Spring time. The cafe is run by by 2 older people who do an excellent job. The service, food and coffee are all excellent, the views into the park are very special. I recommend this cafe to anyone who cherishes old world feel and the simple, good things in life.

We had just come from the Rokkatei in Sapporo and enjoyed that very much. Rokkatei Goryokakuten is just as good, the pastries equally delicate and even better, the coffee is provided free. There is a wide view of the park that makes a lovely hour to spend the afternoon. Don't hesitate to buy some sweets and delicacies for take away or friends. This cafe is just on the edge of the park further down from the ramen and drugstore which is across from the entrance of Goryokaku tower.
