Things to do in Morpeth
My wife and I visit Wallingon Hall several times a year and whilst we thoroughly enjoy the house and gardens, we often regret our visit to the café.Being vegetarians we are somewhat limited in choice and on our last visit we had baked potatoes with cheese accompanied by a small portion of salad and coleslaw. This is a fairly recent introduction to a revised menu. The potatoes appeared to be pre-baked then microwaved resulting in a rubbery skin, strange taste and a watery rather than floury (as it should be) flesh. The cheese had very little if any flavour, more like cheese analogue. I asked a very helpful assistant if she would ask the kitchen staff what cheese it was and, surprisingly, was informed that it was mature cheddar. I know that all the the caféâs ingredients are sourced within Northumberland as locally as possible, but I donât know of any cheese producer who delivers such a bland mature cheddar!Iâm not much of a salad fan, especially when dressed, so gave mine to my wife. Her verdict was that the salad dressing was too oily and the coleslaw too vinegary. It is often stated that National Trust eateries are expensive but thereâs no excuse for them producing poor quality meals.
As we meandered through the various shops we were glad to hit the bakehouse with its variety of fresh sourdough breads. We had bought some lovely olives, oils and cherry vinegar and had some dukkah. Perfect combination!

This little cafe is set at the eastern end of Morpeth's Swan Street. The decor is uninspiring but the menu is pleasantly extensive. Service is a bit haphazard, but friendly. Our meals were all good but substantially overpriced. The heating was turned up so far as to be almost unbearable and the tiled floors make for a very noisy dining experience.

We decided to investigate/discover this wonderfully kept/restored town. The highlight was definitely our lunch in the old stone bond store building perched high on the banks of the river next to the bridge. Food was fresh and delicious. Staff efficiently, friendly and helpful (Iâm on crutches temporarily). We had a great day and will definitely return when Iâm more mobile. Thoroughly recommended.

A lovely location not matched by the Sunday lunch experience. There were few light choices on the menu, ie sandwiches, salads or wraps. My bagel was dry and the long black poorly made and tasteless. Staff were friendly but service was inefficient.

Breakfast recommended by friends. Ordered the homamde beans with poached eggs. It came cold with one fried egg. Friend had the vegan version which was also cold and very overcooked, almost mush. Sent back and both returned in same bowls after being microwaved. Just wrong all around. Coffee nice.

Restaurant / Café style dining. All meals produced within the cafe kitchen from seasonal and/or cafe grown produce. Regularly changing menu and special board.
This eggs Benedict is just perfectly done. You order an eggs Benedict and you get an eggs Benedict, as it should be. Excellent hollandaise, precision in the poaching, a real English muffin, no funny jawbreaker breads, no salads or slaws, no fusion, no Asian spices or seeds, no flowers and NO CORIANDER! Gorgeous staff, I'm ready to go back anytime.

Part of the Morpeth Gallery complex on the corner of Swan and Tank Sts Morpeth. Our cafe is a mix of old fashioned service, quaint tea room atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food made fresh on the premises daily including homestyle soups, quiches,
The Tea Rooms never disappoint, the staff, meals and atmosphere. Extremely hot yesterday so it was fantastic to see the dragons out in force in the eating area, you get nature at itâs best. The savoury mince is genuinely homemade and delicious. Thanks once again Team.
