Iâve visited Kirkâs twice in January both visits whilst out cycling. The first time I had poached eggs on sourdough bread and smashed avocado. The second time I visited was because the eggs were so good on the first visit. The coffee was one of the best Iâve had. Certainly worth a 100+ km bike ride for the poached eggs! The cakes look great and the freshly made ciabatta bread looks delicious. Always going to be a stop whilst out cycling in future.

The Tea Room, furnished with the famous 'Mousey Thompson' tables, is situated off the Main Hall in the Central Building. It provides a welcome respite and nourishing refreshments. Using locally produced products where we can, our menu includes homemade ca
My husband took me here for afternoon tea. The place has changed somewhat since we were here last and the cafe has been moved along with the toilets. Both positive moves as the tea rooms are now bigger and the toilets are just across the hall. It was more difficult to get to the shop. Not sure if this was just because it was low season or a permanent change. The afternoon tea was very nice but we both felt it wasnt as good as it had been. The scones we both felt were a bit dry, well my husband commented that they were very 'biscuity'. As always it was a nice treat in a lovely environment but not sure the quality was as good as it has been. Lovely place though and we would go again.Thank you so much for your review and so pleased that you like the new location of the Tea Room. We were very sorry to hear that your food was not as good as your previous visit and we will certainly pass this feedback on to the team. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

A friend of mine liked it so much she insisted we go....and I wasn't disappointed. Small, old fashioned, and very peaceful. Unaffected 1950s ambience...and prices.Family run, utterly unpretentious, friendly...and the freshest, tastiest tea and scones imaginable. Big pot of tea,hot water, scone, fab cream, butter, real jam....and a tiny garden to sit in and enjoy. And a walk up the lane to a very interesting old church and river to aid digestion!Hard to beat on a sunny day in July.

My wife and I each had a sandwich, a cake and hot drink when we visited recently and thought that the prices are inline with what you would expect from an English Heritage establishment. The staff member was knowledgeable when we enquired about food allergies and the fillings of sandwiches. The seating area is very spacious and surrounded on two sides by large windows, which provide a light and social ambiance. There are tables and seating outside which can be freely used for visitors who choose to bring their own picnic. .

We arrived about 2.40 pm only to be told they were closed, although there were people in there!! Obviously they must have heard our Liverpool accent. Their Facebook page states they are open until 4.30 pm. Very upsetting.Hi sorry but we had to close early for a family emergency. Do you not get them in Liverpool! Nothing to do with your accent. People in were already in before we got a message which meant we had to close early. Next time you canât get in anywhere why not just ask ask why rather than leaving a poor review. Might make you a nicer person and more tolerant. However you did say you were from Liverpool so maybe not.

Me and my friends visited on a Saturday, all staff were friendly and chatty. We enjoyed the large breakfast which was good value including orange juice, tea and toast. The homemade cake selection looked to die for but unfortunately I was stuffed! Lovely cafe with attentive staff.

The Gardens and Cafe are a hidden gem and people do not know what they are missing if they have never been!

Lunch during a day out for four friends. Slight disappointment at first as one our first choices was out of stock but after that it was all good news. The staff were friendly and helpful, the furniture was substantial and comfortable and there was a choice of indoor or outdoor eating. Staying indoors we were delighted with our meals. The two ladies had tuna sandwiches which had a generous layer of fish on fresh, thick wholemeal bread. They were very pleased to note that the accompanying salad was a âproperâ salad with lovely tasty iceberg lettuce with crispy shredded carrot (thankfully, none of those awful limp, floppy âleavesâ that restaurants seem to serve up these days. Thank you Castlegate for keeping up standards and not trying to be trendy. The other two dishes we had were both steak pies. Fantastic! The pie was a complete round pastry case (so many places serve up a casserole with a lump of flaky pastry on top and call that a pie. The pastry was a delightful, light crumbly shortcrust that melted in the mouth and the pie was filled full with tender chunks of beef in a rich, thick sauce. There was a separate small jug of gravy to pour that was also thick and rich in flavour. The accompanying chips were chunky and plentiful. Portions of everything were generous. Iâve noted one or two reviewers have commented they thought the Castlegate was expensive but they cannot have compared the prices to other establishments in the area. We found the Castlegate to be very reasonably priced with good quantities and nice service. Thank you Castlegate, you do a great lunch.

Our welcoming bistro cafés, delicatessen and bakeries in York & Helmsley, have a distinctly European feel. We fuse French and Italian cuisine seamlessly with the best that Yorkshire has to offer (and my goodness that is good!). Mannion's could be mistaken
Having been here before and had an excellent meal, it was so good we decided to go for a light lunch...however our waitress Natalie did point out that they were doing roast beef again now that summer was over and that it was lovely. She wasnât wrong! It was lovely! The beef was tender and pink, the Yorkshire pudding was perfect, the roast vegetables including Jerusalem artichokes were amazing, everything was perfect, plenty of gravy and horseradish.Really great Sunday lunch with friendly service from Natalie. We will definitely return.
