Ballroom Cafe at Larnach Castle

Stopped by the ballroom cafe for a quick snack after touring the castle. The room is attached to the side of the castle and has multiple entrances. We went through from the side of the castle through the large wooden doors. The room itself was quite large and spacious. It had quite a few fireplaces going so it had quite a nice atmosphere. We just went for some sweets in the cabinet. We had the marshmallow slice, frangipane tart, and caramel slice. They were ok. They did have hot food options available.

Used to be one of our favourite cafes, but this last visit was a total let down, before arriving for dinner had checked website and liked the look of some dishes on their “All Day Menu”. On arrival was told quite bluntly they had stopped their “All Day Menu” some months before, staff attitude to diners was appalling, no smiles, little service, boss must be grumpy, ordered Rissotto and local Fish n Chips, Rissotto was over cooked and almost inedible, coleslaw in Fish dish had no dressing and was brown like it was some days old, will not be back, sad to see such unresponsive staff and boss.

Visited here on a rainy Dunedin morning. The fire was lit and there was a nice ambiance. The place is quite eclectic in it's decor but welcoming. The coffee was great as were our meals - eggs benedict with bacon and mushrooms with rocket, parmesan and thyme butter. The portions were generous and the flavours really good. They also have cabinet food including muffins and huge scones and offer wood fire pizzas in the evening. Would definitely recommend - the meals came out promptly and the service was good

I came upon this delightful cafe while out for an early morning walk near the university, on a visit to Dunedin. It has a charming, bright interior and great decor with plenty of comfortable seating. Staff are welcoming and attentive. There is an excellent range of delectable cabinet options, utilising mainly organic foods where possible, and caters very well for those with GF, LF or other specific dietary requirements. The menu offers a superb range of choices to appeal to most palates. The fair trade coffee has excellent flavour and is prepared by a skilled barista.

Ironic is a very convenient, centrally located cafe, that has a good menu, and Thursday to Sunday has gluten free savoury scones on offer. They also do a lovely gluten free berry and coconut cake. The coffee is wonderful, as are the staff. It is located opposite the magnificent historic train station and I would definitely recommend a visit here.
