This is a review of El Gato Negro - the Black Cat's new dinnertime alter ego. For a review of 'The Cat' see my previous review. The apps, 'mocktails', and desserts were all really delicious. We had the Spanish Olives, Marcona Almonds, Squash Blossoms, and Fennel Salad. All were tasty but the squash blossom dish was uniquely wonderful - fresh, light, flavorful. They do not have a liquor license so we enjoyed 'mocktails'. Filled with a variety of fresh fruits, veggies, and herbs we liked all of the ones we tried. Though if I had to pick a favorite it would be the Red Panther Sangria (my least favorite was the Tropicalico which I found too banana-y).The desserts were also fabulous. We tried the molten chocolate cake, black forest cake, and best of all the key lime pie which was one of the best ones we've ever tasted (very tangy). But the entrees were disappointing. I don't know if it is a failure of the chef or the equipment but neither our steak nor the paella was cooked at a high enough temperature. The quality of the ingredients was there...just not the fire. Our medium rare steak was undercooked on the outside and overcooked inside - warm and barely pink instead of warm and red. Perhaps more disappointing was the paella which came across as a kind of steamed rice - too wet and no socarrat (chewy, caramelized crust) on the bottom. All in all I strongly encourage you to try El Gato Negro and we certainly anticipate returning. And hopefully they will work out their issues with the 'fire'.

Penny Lick Ice Cream Company offers old fashioned, custard style ice cream with all natural, local ingredients. We are proud that we never use stabilizers, fillers, gums, artificial colors or flavors. And we never use processed sweetners - just old fashio
Penny Lick ice cream is in the heart of downtown Hastings on Hudson, right across from a bank, and near other shops and restaurants. It looks like a place where they have homemade, all natural ice-cream; I don't know if the ice-cream is homemade or all natural; I found no signs indicating one way or the other. The man behind the counter was very nice, and helpful, and gave generous scoops (My kind of place!). The prices were competitive. I ended up getting the chocolate malt ice cream, which did have malt-balls in it, but didn't really taste all that much like them, in my opinion. The ice cream was good, but not great. It was a little dense, and not the creamiest. It was satisfying enough though. My son enjoyed his vanilla bean. It hit the spot on this hot day.
