When you ask someone what do you want for your 85th birthday and the answer is not a lot, actually nothing you have to think of something else!As he loves his trains, buses and trams an afternoon tea at a railway station seemed perfect, and it was. The cream tea was lovely and fresh and just seemed to keep coming, the service was great and nothing was too much trouble.Having had a few cream teas over the years this was one of the better ones and very reasonably priced

Very warm welcome. Enthusiastic waitress, eager to hear what we thought of the meal. I had the haunch of venison, which was cooked to perfection (pink!) and my husband who wanted his steak well done, was also delighted with the food. French onion soup was a bit disappointing, needs a few tweaks, but potted crab was delicious. This place isn't cheap (£90 for two, with two glasses of wine) but the food is consistently of a high standard. The pub is dog friendly, the table next to us had the delightful Eric sleeping under the table - do say hello if he is there when you visit :-)Hi LadyliddersWhat a lovely review. This restaurant never fails to deliver great food and service. The staff are amazing and Nikolett looked after us brilliantly. Nothing was too much trouble even with the very demanding table we could hear near us and their rudeness to the staff was the only thing that ruined this visit. Reading some of the other reviews its like reading about a completely different restaurant to the one im in. On the rare occasion i had an issue the team were super efficient at ressolving it. Yes the decor is a little tired looking however considering the age and location of the building it hasn't ever been an issue for me personally or my guests who find it nice and cosy.Would highly recommend on my experiences as i love this restaurant.Yamr14,thank you for sharing your positive experience! Visited here on a Sunday afternoon using a groupon voucher for two course meal with glass of wine for two people. We chose a starter and main eachand the food was really good and very tasty. What can I say? Attentive staff, lovely environment, pleasant place to eat. But the food really wasnât good. Skate terrine was tasteless, although the salad with it was lovely, no bread served with it. The plaice main course was ridiculous, the fish was so tiny it was more of a dab than a plaice. Really, never seen anything so tiny. Two bites and it was gone. The potato served with it was rather slimy and unpleasant. The stone bass was fine, if a bit small, but acceptable. Dessert of rhubarb and custard tart was very good. We had a nice time because we never let disappointing food ruin our day. But I donât think weâll bother again, other than maybe a sandwich.Dear kimmN42GT,Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your review on this site following your lunch visit last April.It is most disappointing to hear that we failed to meet your expectations in relation to food quality. The Spring/Summer menus were just in place when you visited last and it did take us a bit longer than usual for all dishes to be as planned, therefore I apologise if this was the case on the day you visited. Ive visited here countless times but this time i came the food was good but service was very slack considering it was a week night and not very busy. We had to ask 3 times for our drinks+twice for the bill which really isnt accepteble,at least the food was ok+i will return but staff really need be more attentive+focused on whats been asked.Hello Leedsrgr8May I apologise on behalf of the front of house team at The Birch for their lack of attentiveness on your recent visit which is not acceptable. I will be speaking to the staff on duty about the importance of looking after all our customers. Please make yourself known to Mark, the Manager, on your next visit (he was not on duty) and he will endeavour to make sure that this does not occur again.

My husband and I took the celebration afternoon tea. Fantastic food and experience with not a sandwich in sight. Range of tastes and textures. Best afternoon tea experience I have ever had for my preferences.Head waiter excellent although some of the other waitresses needed prompting a number of times about some water we had asked for.If I had to choose an afternoon tea I would always choose this little gem

We came here with a few friends and booked the private dining room upstairs as it was a celebration. We had the 8 course tasting menu and selected some excellent and fairly priced wines.The food was well presented, flavourful and in smaller portions as you would expect for a tasting menu.The staff were very professional an friendly, Particularly Thomas, who was very amusing.The whole evening flew by and was a great experience, one we shall repeat.
