Salcombe is a popular resort town in the South Hams district of Devon, south west England. The town is close to the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary, mostly built on the steep west side of the estuary. It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The town's extensive waterfront and the naturally sheltered harbour formed by the estuary gave rise to its success as a boat and shipbuilding and sailing port and, in modern times, tourism especially in the form of pleasure sailing and yachting. The town is also home to a traditional shellfish fishing industry. The town is part of the electoral ward of Salcombe and Malborough, for which the 2011 census recorded a total population of 3,353.

Have recently enjoyed the Tapas on Thursday evening. The accoustics are greatly improved since our last visit so can hear what is going on at our table. There is a good selection of dishes on offer and great value at 3 for £10. Our group all ordered different dishes so we shared the variety of tastes on offer. Some dishes I have never seen in Spain but they were all enjoyable and something there to suit everyone's tasted. Great evening with friendly helpful staff.

All generally agreeable: We stayed in the “Stella” room that is accessible across a flat roof above the inn. A bit damp underfoot when we walked there, but in fine weather I’d guess it’s great for a rooftop party. Room was decent and the bathroom had an enormous bath although neither it, nor the washbasin, had a plug, so we resorted to stuffing flannels into the plug holes. Breakfast had all you could expect, Continental or Full-English, with pleasant staff. Would certainly recommend.

Great, friendly staff who are expertly overseen by the charming owner & restaurant manger. Picked this speciality fish restaurant based on the trip advisor rating and positive reviews. Sadly our experience didn't match. We loved the décor & ambience, the concept of choosing 3 fish (pan) or 6 fish (platter), choice of accompaniments and sides and the food was indeed first class. The quality of the fish, expertly cooked was beautifully presented. However, the prices are extortionate - £26 for the pan/£37 for the platter! – and if you wanted lemon sole or lobster it is additional £8.50 or £10.50 respectively!Unfortunately, the service was lacking for such first-class food. Only two staff, leading to lengthy waits and an all-round lack of attention. Our waitress was unable to answer questions about the types of fish on offer or whether it was local, which we suggest in a speciality fish restaurant is poor and the other member of staff, who we believe may have been the manager, was not even in uniform, wearing a pair of scruffy jeans and sweatshirt. She even expressed a lack of desire to have to go downstairs to get a particular beer requested. Despite having shellfish which required fingers, we were not offered finger bowls or bowls for the shells, not even an additional napkin. Complimentary water was not offered either. It seems a shame, as we have previously said, the quality of the food was first class and clearly, the chefs are doing a top job. But if you want to have an establishment charging these kind of prices, the experience and service must match.

Part of our visits to Hope Cove are the requisite crab sandwich in this restaurant. A really popular place with the countless walkers passing through. Opened up seating upstairs and if the sun is out, you can sit outside. This is the sort of place where you wish you had ordered what the people sat around you are eating.

Visited here in October 2019 and was so good we came back for a second successive night. The garlic prawns and scallops to start are really simple and well done but it is the specials that I would so recommend. We had the hake with creamed spinach which I think was the best piece of fish I have ever eaten and my wife had the whole crab which she has not stopped talking about. For fish eaters I think this is the place to go in Salcombe. Prices are also very reasonable, two courses plus wine for 2 for under £90.Thanks for returning.Glad you enjoyed the specials. Our specials generally come in daily so they are fresh, fresh, fresh.Appreciate your lovely review.
