It is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. Burford is located 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham, about 2 miles (3 km) from the Gloucestershire boundary. The toponym derives from the Old English words burh meaning fortified town or hilltown and ford, the crossing of a river. The 2011 Census recorded the population of Burford parish as 1,410 and Burford Ward as 1,847.

We called in here for food and couldn't believe how far back the dining area went. There's also a really nice outdoor courtyard at the back if you're visiting and the weather is nice. The staff were very helpful in getting us a table and served us drinks at the bar while we waited. Lots of gluten free options to choose from for those needing a celiac diet.

Wet couple of days, visiting "places". What we needed was a comfortable, friendly place to eat with matching food. This ticked the boxes. Both the bar and dining room were un-fussy but obviously old, the food was good and unpretentious, the service good but unobtrusive. If we are there, we will go again.

Superb standard of cooking and fresh ingredients. Decor and ambience also first class. Wine list just right and decent value for money. A great evening in the restaurant and a fantastic Full Bull Breakfast superbly cooked and attently served with bags of hospitality and a superb choice of hot and cold items on the menu. Really very good. Thoroughly recommended.

Had dinner here on Sunday night. Lovely atmosphere, good service and very good food. Steak was cooked as ordered and well complimented with a rocket salad and chunky chips. Reasonably priced wine added to the great evening. A great find especially as so few places serve food on a Sunday evening so cĺose to our hotel. Definitely return again to try a different dish.

First time visit to Burford, menu looked inviting. Didnât have to wait long for service or for food. There is a lovely garden too. settled on the roast beef, the steak and ale pie looked inviting too.Would return.Many thanks for your review. We tried this little cafe today while visiting the lovely village of Burford. The coffee is just superb, I even asked what make it was and apparently it comes from Bristol. We also had a scone with real fruity jam and these were also gorgeous. Well worth a try everything was a cut above the rest. Hi Terry. Thank you for your comments! We use Extract coffee which is roasted in Bristol which is local and in keeping with our beliefs of supporting local businesses. The scones are new this week and are an old recipe from my mum! We visited this outlet by chance as we were staying close by. The restaurant was very busy both with small dining parties and a large party of 30 downstairs.The outlet also has rooms which we will return to sample if the quality of the restaurant food and service is anything to go by.The menu was varied and had dishes we had not tried anywhere else and all items were freshly cooked and had flavours to excite the most discerning palate.The service was attentive but not intrusive making for a really good visit.It was obvious that booking a table is a must to guarantee you can dine at this superb outlet. No wonder they had achieved such awards. Thank you for taking the time to write us such a kind review. We recently saw Bob Mortimer at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and he gave the Royal Oak a 5 star review for their pies. We often go to Burford and don't much off the High Street, but this very welcoming pub down a side street is well worth a wander. We visited for Sunday Lunch and we both thought that the food was as good as any other pub in the area and there is a lot of competition. Looking forward to a wander again this time to try the pies.

What a lovely experience at lunchtime today. We were greeted with a pleasant welcome with very attentive staff. My partner was undecided on his drink and was given samples so he could decide. Lunch was warm, tasty, with a good choice of meats & vegetables. A pleasant view over the countryside as we had a table window. We were not rushed and felt relaxed in the pleasant atmosphere.
