Tucked away in a strip mall off Rte 40, this pub is a familiar landmark, and a must for those who love Maryland crab dishes. The crab cakes and fries, regular or sweet potato, are marvelous. There is a full menu of mostly American dishes besides, but what bother?

I went here for dinner with my husband on a Friday night. We made reservations prior and arrived a bit early, but had no trouble being seated upon arrival. They have an extensive alcohol menu with a wide variety of regional beer. I stuck with with a standard American beer - Pabst Blue Ribbon. For my meal, I had their specialty burger "The White Oak Burger" with a side of Hungarian mushroom soup. My husband had the vegetarian spaghetti and meatballs. The food did not taste how either of us expected it too. The Hungarian mushroom soup was a bit disappointing - it had various vegetables in it, but I could not taste them - I mainly tasted the paprika. The burger was better and had good flavors. My husband enjoyed his meal. The service was good - the waitress's name was Tori and she did her job well. She checked on us often. Prices are a bit high.

We went recently for a light dinner, knowing that the restaurant had opened only recently and was still in a shake-down mode. I had the wings with the signature honey-based sauce, and my partner had a crabcake. The wings were large, well cooked without being over-fried and dry, and the sauce was tasty if a tad messy. My companion pronounced the crabcake good but not the best he'd ever had (we're picky). Friends with us had the pulled pork, a beet and arugula salad, and a chopped salad with avocado -- all pronounced good. You'll notice we were generally happy with our food, but not raving about it. And the prices seem a bit high although the quality of the ingredients is excellent. (The fries, by the way, were outstanding, but I don't go to a restaurant just for the fries!)Service was attentive and we received our food quickly. The new-technology system that took orders and created checks was cranky that evening, but our flustered server was finally able to outwit it. I know folks liked its predecessor, T-Bonz, but I found that to be poorly managed with rude servers and even ruder regulars who made remarks to women. After an unpleasant evening when I was verbally abused by one of the regulars, and had to have a lengthy discussion to get my bill correct, I never darkened the door again. I will return to HoCo Brew Hive, and hope they'll improve on a few of the details!
