Things to do in Hofu
Full disclosure: I am an unreconstructed, unapologetic, unrepentant flesh-eater of Neanderthalian proportions. And the best kind of meat, as far as I am concerned, is the kind that comes to you raw and bloody, for you to grill to perfection, slice by slice, over hissing charcoal embers, then slather on a bit of raw grated garlic, wrap it in a lettuce leaf and pop it greedily into your mouth. That is precisely what I did tonight at Gyukaku, which has come to be my favourite restaurant in Hofu, and my favourite yakiniku (Japanese barbecue) place of all time. And I've been to a lot of yakiniku joints here in Japan, in America, in Korea and in Thailand, so this is not an idle commentt by any means.First, the atmosphere. Gyukaku in Hofu looks like a 100-year-old Japanese ryokan (country inn), both inside and out. "Rustic charm", I believe, is the term. Low ceilings and sequestered tables make for a cozy atmosphere, which means this would be a damn good place to bring a date, provided she too is a ravenous carnivore.Second, the service. I don't know if the management actually set out to hire the most beautiful girls in Hofu city, but they seem to have hired them nonetheless. I was waited on by four different waitresses, and none of them would look out of place in a fashion magazine. The young ladies were cheerful, prompt, and exquisitely attentive. The mark of a perfect waitress. I was almost sorry that tipping is not a custom here, or I would have tipped all four. Finally, the food. I ordered the all-you-can-eat special course, the most expensive thing on the menu, with one hundred different items to choose from, plus all the beer, shochu drinks, whisky drinks, Japanese sake and soft drinks as you can pour down your gullet in an hour and a half. I actually opted for the non-alcoholic course, simply because I didn't want my senses dulled for the enjoyment of the meat. I drank iced yerba maté tea, which is said to counteract the possible deleterious effects of eating large quantities of roasted red meat. Couldn't hurt, I thought.I ordered short ribs, skirt steak with a butter sauce, sirloin, flank steak, beef liver and tongue. I will not say how many plates of each I consumed, because I don't want to alarm anyone. But it was all so ridiculously good I honestly lost track. After the last bite had been grilled and consumed, I leaned back against the wall and had a cigarette (this being Japan, one can do this), precisely as one might do after having had mind-glowingly good sex.I then had a cup of hot tea and a dish of green tea ice cream, which was absolutely the right way to finish a meal of this sort. Finally, I was presented with my bill, which came to just over forty-five dollars. When I went up to pay, the head waiter knocked ten dollars off, just because I'm a good customer and he's a nice guy. All of the staff shouted a hearty thank you and goodbye to me as I headed out, and one of the angelic waitresses walked me to the door and bade me to take care going home, and to come back soon. And that is precisely what I plan to do.
Top 7 International food in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
