Le Bouchon Gourmand

Reviewed By Arrahant

The restaurant is located next to the town of Spa, situated at a nice location near the Lac de Warfaaz. Although the waitress was very friendly, we had to wait quite long to receive the menu, place our order and receive our drinks and food. Getting the attention of the waitress also took long (at least 15-20 minutes), and when we wanted to ask the waitress about some of the dishes on the menu, she answered one question quickly and rushed away before we could ask another. Additionally and related to the above, it can be hard for non-French speaking persons to find out what to order, since the menu is in French and features mostly non standard dishes, and the service seemed to be French speaking only. Also, quite a lot of items featured on the menu could not be ordered since they were out of stock. Since the menu is presented on chalkboard I wondered, why not just wipe those items out? That being said, the food itself was pretty good. Since we arrived late and noticed service was slow, we only went for main courses. I had a steak with mushroom sauce (entrecote) and my partner had duck in orange sauce. We both asked for fries with our dish, yet only received one portion. If we wanted more fries, the waitress told us, all we had to was ask. Which left me to wonder: didn't we both order fries?! Yet again, the waitress was gone again right away. My partner did have some Rösti placed on her plate, so perhaps that counted as her 'fries'.Also, mind that you have to pay for everything separately. For example, when the waitress asked if I wanted sauce with the steak, I thought that would be included in the 26 euro price tag of the steak. Afterwards I found out I was charged 2 euro's extra for the sauce. The menu did not mention this. Then it was time for the dessert. I order a local Chouffe coffee, and my partner ordered Creme Brulee. A couple of minutes later the waitress came back to tell us both were out of stock. So we then both ordered some kind of coffee icecream in a tall glass, which was good but not that special. The above main dishes and desserts, together with two carafes of wine cost around 85 euro's. I found this quite expensive for what we got, although the food did taste nice. Together with the long waiting times I would think twice before visiting this restaurant again.

La Source de la Geronstere

While ordering we inquired where the Entrecote was from, "Ireland" said the waiter. After complaining that it was overcooked dry and tasteless, we were told that it was the best Argentinian beef! When the bill arrived, the steak was itemised as "Brazilian" entrecote. To cap it all, when we complained we were informed that the steak was Blanc-bleu from Belgium. Need I say more?

La Charbonnade

Reviewed By Mark M

I recently had a chance to pass by and eat at this small restaurant/grill in Malmedy. It was a Friday and the place was quite busy. The speciality of the place is the table grill where you can choose a selection of meats and cheese and grill them at your own pleasure. However since I was alone I had to opt for something else as these dishes are for a minimum 2 to share. The host was very welcoming and I had mushrooms as a starter which were delicious. As a main I opted for the Cote a l'Os which is a bone-in Entrecote. Grilled to perfection with accompanying French fries and salad. The house wine was excellent and very good quality for a house wine. All in all a very good meal with decent prices. One small problem is that with all the grilling going on the restaurant does tend to get a bit smokey. Otherwise service was prompt and attentive. Will definitely go again and a must for meat lovers.
