A welcoming restaurant and bar in the middle of the woods. Food is mainly wild game, rich and tasty. Log fires and wood burning stoves. There is no type of cuisine in your list to describe the type of food. 'Artisan' or 'Rustic' springs to mind. Perhaps y
Well liked by bicyclists riding or racing through the area this cafe, tucked away in the woods, was a fantastic restaurant. Some friends brought us here for a dinner on a warm Saturday evening. Driving through the forest we turned into a somewhat large dirt parking lot with an unpaved footpath that led up a hill to this hidden gem. With a large expansive terrace (complete with shade available overhead if you didn't want to sit in the direct sun, the seating comprised of long tables with matching benches. Despite it being crowded we were immediately seated. Surrounding the terrace are fenced fields with various animals (obviously well cared for and happy) - a pony, goats, spotted deer, peacocks, and other farm animals - all friendly and, on occasion, poking their heads through the wire fence to be petted or just to say "hello". A great place for families with children, it also is a favorite destination for others enjoying the area. In addition to the terraces there was also indoor seating and a large fireplace, which I imagine, would be a very cozy place in the winter. Using locally sourced food, the food was a really pleasant surprise. We were a party of four (two couples) and were promptly welcomed and served by a friendly and professional server (also very accomodating to last minute changes in our choices). Three of us opted for soup as starters - the description and the obvious approval by some fellow diners prompted us to order 3 soups (1 shared) - tomato, aspargus and classic onion. The tomato soup looked to have a base of roasted tomatoes and red pepper. The depth of the flavors obviously indicated a lot of attention to its ingredients. According to our friend, the balance of tomatoes to pepper was just right and the seasoning was done with a fine hand. The aspargus soup was based on Limburg's local white aspargus and was very light, well seasoned and containing chopped hard boiled egg which gave it an interesting contrast in textures and taste. The onion soup which my husband and I shared was sublime and quite possibly the best classic onion soup I've ever tasted. The stock was obviously "home-made" and was rich and flavorful, while the onions were slow roasted and carmalized to perfection. The serving was sufficient for two people, with lots of cheese and a large crouton. Again, the chef showed a true hand at seasoning - with fresh thyme and other herbs. Next time I would expect we'd each order a bowl for ourselves in order to relish each and every bite. For our entrees one friend ordered the beefsteak with bernaise sauce. His steak was cooked to perfection - medium rare as he requested - served with a selection of fresh (again all locally sourced) vegetables and frites. Our other friend ordered Opa's (Grandfather;s) Kippeje - a wonderful chicken stew, well flavored with their own brown ale, with carrots, mushrooms, bacon served in a little pot accompanied by a variety of fresh vegetables and fries. We opted for their Hijgend Hert Salad - (available both in full and small versions). A warm(ish) salad, it included fresh greens, tomatoes, nuts, pine nuts, fruits and bacon - with a light balsamic vinagrette. Each and every bite was delicious but the star of the salad was a healthy serving of a goat cottage cheese - that was tasty and a surprise. Not being fond of regular cottage cheese I was unsure about how it would be - but I would definitely go out of my way to find that cheese again. The restaurant also brews their own brand of beers. If the taste of the chicken stew is anything to go by their brown ale is robust, hearty and delicious. I would definitely recommend this for a wonder eating experience - day or evening and intend to return again.
