Reviews on Bar food in Salamanca, Province of Salamanca, Spain. Known as Spain’s "golden city," Salamanca is rich in architectural, religious and gastronomic culture. Marvel at the La Casa de las Conchas (house of shells) and the 18th century Plaza Mayor, then pore over the fresh produce of the Central Market. Both the Old and New Cathedrals of Salamanca are celebrations of Renaissance and Gothic styles.

Friends invited us to El Rastrel, just off Gran VÃa, for their once-a-month vegan brunch. (I think the first Sunday of the month). We had several courses of tasty vegan fare for 10E, with all proceeds benefiting an animal rights organization. Casual and cute, with flowers and candles on the tables and good service. All locals. Will return to try their artesenal beers!

I don't know how they do it. This is a family-run restaurant north of the city centre, and there are dozens of fresh--and I mean fresh--tapas available. Lots of locals visit the restaurant, and I see why. I've ordered a tortilla (just the right amount of onion), a wonderful slice of bread with tomato, ham and olive oil, and most recently fried calamari that was actually hot and hadn't sat around for ages. It's a walk, but hey. You can burn off the calories.

You would expect to pay a little more to sit and look at Plaza Mayor, everyone would accept that. At Gonzalo you pay more and get less quality than others places in the same area. We made the mistake of sitting where it was busy, usually a good sign. My advice - look at the menu first then decide. Our food was bland and over priced, the Jose Pariente wine was excellent but that forgives nothing. Avoid here I f you have a chance, the waiting staff were not friendly either.Dear Duquesadiner We can tell you that the quality of our tapas and their elaboration are top quality. We are very sorry you did not like it.Thank you for your visit and for giving us your opinion.Best regardsLas Tapas de Gonzalo

Nicely placed at a small street closed to traffic and nearby Plaza Mayor. Food quality was good to high. Some excellent surprises (morcilla with Casar cheese), and some average, rather uninspiring food like the presa de iberico. Tap beer was also rather meek: would recommend go for recognized brand bottles or, if you're up to it, straight for the wine.We want there for a relaxed dinner over tapas. The experience had its lights and shadows. We sat at a table in the street, just in front of the main door. A couple seated next to us and started smoking. The waiter kindly pointed them out towards a separate group of tables designed as smoking area, so we were able to enjoy a mostly smoke free dinner. Also, we asked for some tapas outside the menu and they were able to prepare it.On the dark side, the restaurant is a bit pricy and, to our amazement, they do not accept credit cards. All in all a good place to have some tapas, but I don't think I'll come back soon.

We stumbled upon this bar quite late at night. There were a few other patrons still drinking. The bartender Felix made us drinks that were out of this world. He made us comfortable and even popped some fresh popcorn when a couple of us asked him about it.Try his mojito and martinis, you will go back for more. We will surely be back there sometime.

Our daughter was doing a Spanish language course in Salamanca so happy with Spanish menus and trying to bumble through with the language. English is not widely spoken in Salamanca but as with most places in the world, a genuine attempt at the local language and a smile is reciprocated with help. Staff in the taps and bar section here were great. Then we graduated to the dining room - after a performance getting a dinner reservation in the first place. Young assistant waiter was helpful. The head guy was almost a caricature of a Spanish waiter - theatrically arrogant, unhelpful and absolutely no attempt to accommodate our halting Spanish - anything else than perfect Castilian might as well have been Martian. Food - forgettable. This was recommended as the best restaurant in Salamanca. Not even close. Don't bother.
