I loved this place! We stumbled across this restaurant on our way back to Southampton due to a road closure (on this occasion, very lucky!). We could choose to have 1, 2 or 3 courses. The latter only costing £23. The décor was lovely, the atmosphere friendly & the staff helpful & friendly. The food is cooked from scratch so they were able to accommodate my dietary needs easily & without fuss. We had tempura prawns & onion bhaji to start. The latter had mango & chilli with it, & was scrummy. We then had the roast (beef & turkey). These came with a large serving of vegetables. Again, delicious. My partner had the rocky road cheesecake for dessert & loved it. The portions were generous, so there's no danger of going hungry! This is also good value for money. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. If you're considering visiting, please make sure you do.

We were huge advocates of this place from the very first day. So many changes in staff and the chef teams have meant that, over the years, food and service became unreliable. We visited last night for the first time in about 4 years. Service was great and the food was very good. I really hope this continues as Newbury is desperate for this to be brilliant again.

A long standing coaching inn looking forward with traditions from the past, we look to do good food cooked well. we cook dishes from our life and most will tell a story.
Myself and my partner visited here the initial thought was just wow itâs a lovely building very nice inside and out! Greeted by very friendly staff. We chose to sit outside and we werenât disappointed the garden was beautiful and well set out with light music in the background. We had read a few reviews before about portion sizes but went ahead anyway and true to others words they were huge. My partner had a cheese and mushroom roll and I went for the chicken goujons which my partner had to help me finish. Onto the main my partner had a wonderful steak which he thoroughly enjoyed, I had the Thai chicken burger and wow it was amazing it looked and tasted fantastic! Pudding was a do we or donât we as we were quite full by this point. Other diners were having pudding and my partner said I donât care how full we are we have to have a pudding! He had a cheesecake and I had Eton mess and they were equally as lovely as the rest of the meal.

Went for Sunday lunch. Ordered olives to nibble with my wine - they eventually arrived with the main course!! We had ordered the roast pork lunch . I had to ask for some apple sauce despite the dish being described with apple sauce on the menu . The apple sauce for two of us then came in a tiny pot (a half size ramekin) !!The actual meat and veg were perfectly cooked and delicious. I have had problems with the service there before - the waiting staff seem very inexperienced and possibly English is not their first languageThanks for your review. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the food. As you say, we are currently training some new members of staff and I apologise if this impacted on the service. We hope to see you again in the future.

Got to say I support the two reviews from April about the pub possibly going downhill. This is the first time I've been here to eat, so it may be odd for me to say that, but as a local I knew about the place by reputation and some of the photos showed some good food on offer. Our Sunday lunch however for three people was a real disappointment. The beer was good and the selection was great but the food was not worth going back for. The couple on the next table ordered their 'famous pie'... it went back. It was one of those pots of stew with a puff pastry lid, not the handmade pie shown on one of the photos on here from previous customers.. My roast beef looked like the sliced meat had been under the hotplate for ages, the carrots were 'al dente' (or raw) and the parnips were burnt to a crisp and the cabbage was boiled mush. My wife's meal was equally disappointing. Sorry. Won't be back. The owner needs to grip the kitchen before the pub loses it's appeal.

A free house, serving locally sourced quality pub food, ales and wines.
A family get-together for my wifeâs 70th Birthday comprising 5 Adults, 2 Children and a 9month old granddaughter. The staff were delightfully helpful, allocating us a table in a quiet part of the dining room, help mounting some birthday decorations and providing a high chair. Our meals were well-priced, beautifully cooked and presented. The meat dishes were superb using beef, lamb and pork from the best butcher in Newbury - Griffins. And try the most tasty Scotch Eggs Iâve ever tasted. The pub is clean and tidy and situated in easily accessible near Newbury. Compliments to the locals in the pub who were friendly, hospitable and even joined in our singing of Happy Birthday! Highly recommended
