Moss Vale Services Club Brasserie

Reviewed By pandd1946

We visited the Moss Vale Services Club for lunch recently whilst visiting the Southern Highlands. On arrival, we were advised that the restaurant was closed due to a heavy storm the night before which caused some flooding. We decided to have a refreshment in the bar area and will try the Club again next time we visit, and we hope to have a better outcome.

The Dormie House

Reviewed By simonw582

We researched accommodation that also offered a good restaurant, and when we found the Dormie House menu on-line we thought we had hit the jackpot - it sounded sensational. When we sat down for dinner, the very abbreviated menu we received bore no resemblance to the one we had found on-line (on the Dormie House own website). Somehow, the restaurant had gone from a fine dining establishment to serving pub food (garlic prawns and bangers and mash featured). The explanation we received was that sometime ago they had removed the Restaurant page (and menu) from their web site as their guests wanted plainer food (?), but that somehow the page was still available to anyone searching for their menu.I accepted this explanation; the Internet is notorious for retaining information that owners would rather be deleted. Therefore, while we were a bit annoyed and disappointed with this development, I won’t hold it against the restaurant, and the rating will only reflect the food and service that we received. Just don’t expect a fine dining experience if you happen to stumble on the old menu as we did.The dining room was old fashioned and rustic, but quite pleasant. The staff were friendly and helpful, and dealt well with our initial confusion. The dishes we chose were good rather than excellent. Some items (lamb cutlets cooked exactly as requested) was a positive, but the strange tasting Thai salad (with a lot of tomatoes and cucumber), was not. Again, desserts were OK, rather than items to rave about. I was going to end my review there, but our breakfasts experience cannot be passed by. On the first morning we arrived to find a modest buffet (cereal, yoghurt, toast) and were given a card from which to choose a cooked breakfast. We received perfectly poached eggs, a mountain of excellent, meaty bacon, and very nice hash browns. We could have added sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms. On our way out we commented to staff (in a positive way) that the next morning we would ask for less bacon, as we could not finish it, and we hated wasting it. The response, that the next morning was OK because there were more guests, puzzled us.The second morning (yes there were a few more guests) the fresh cooked breakfast was gone, replaced by a number of warmers with lumpy scrambled eggs, and tired, limp and grossly over cooked, bacon, tomatoes etc. They were collectively awful. Clearly there were not sufficient extra guests to ensure frequent replenishment. When there are few guests, then it’s not worthwhile putting out the whole buffet, but beyond a certain number the kitchen does not want to prepare fresh breakfasts. This is crazy, who would offer guests an excellent breakfast one day, and rubbish the next! The whole exercise was clearly for expediency and corner cutting, and not to offer guests a lovely experience, and that philosophy seems to permeate the whole hotel. As with the hotel accommodation the restaurant was saved from a bottom score by its staff, who in trying circumstances were uniformly excellent.Thank you for your feedback, I will address all your comments with our chef.Woody

Bush Rangers Bistro

Hard to know how to rate this - 4 for the full pub experience, but 3 perhaps for quality of food.We have been to the Bistro inside the historical Surveyor General Inn several times over the years, and twice this week. The service - in the bistro and the bar is friendly and efficient, and the spaces comfortable of the type of establishment it is.The food is good though on the first night my duck was a little dry, and on the second night a pretty large number of menu items were not available. It was nice, though, to see some food items different from the usual pub fare.
