We revisited this pub when staying nearby because we so enjoyed the food the last time we visited the area. We were not disappointed this time either.

Ideally located in the picturesque village of West Tanfield, The Bruce Arms is an 18th Century Coaching Inn with real character and comfort. Glorious sun terrace for summer evenings and comforting log fires in the winter. Some of the finest food in Yorksh
Michelin quality! 5 star! From walking in to the restaurant to leaving everything was superb! Staff so helpful, the chef took time to say hello too! The food was unbelievably gorgeous! The owner offered us a fresh homemade bread bun ( 6 different types) the starter was exquisite, I chose the choux pastry crab beignet! I have Never tasted something so amazing! And We had a Sunday roast, the beef was cooked to perfection ( as it all was) I could have cut the beef with a spoon. The veg all tasted unreal and the gravy I could have ate as a soup, as tasted well wow! ! Only one problem... we where too full for dessert haha as couldnât bare to leave anything! I am still sat smiling now! I often find eating a roast out is hit and miss... not this it genuinely was perfection! Nectar!!! Thanks to all the amazing staff and extremely talented chef!!! We shall certainly be returning!

Liked the seasonal specials on the updated menu with the lamb fillet and asparagus particularly good. Food beautifully cooked. Nicely furnished but the place lacks a bit of atmosphere and was only half full on a Saturday night, yet bizarrely when I booked I was told they only had tables available at certain times.I am glad you enjoyed your meal and the surroundings. We try to spread tables out so people aren't rushed and can enjoy their evening. The Asparagus has been well received and hopefully you will return again soon ?Many thanks for your kind comments.Steve

We booked ahead for dinner in the restaurant as we were arriving that afternoon. Staff were friendly and the food was really nice. We then booked for Sunday lunch the next day in the bar as we wanted to bring our dog along. Again staff and food lovely. Iâd highly recommend as a place to eat if you are in the area.

We visited on a Saturday night during our recent stay just outside Bedale and were made to feel very welcome. Great food, quick service and very reasonably priced. They were very busy and we were very grateful that they managed to squeeze us in! Would recommend booking ahead! Will definitely re-visit if were are in the area again!

Having visited the next door Black Sheep tap and having enjoyed a good visit we were very disappointed at our visit here. There were four staff either serving or looking after the tables and not one smiled once. The locals who came in were very loud and obnoxious and this was a Saturday afternoon but the staff cannot be blamed for that but allowed these people to be loud and make the atmopshere very unwelcoming especially when thei average age was 50 plus !We can only praise the beer whihc was excellently kept for the one we had but obviously we did not stay for a second !Maybe picked a bad day !

Booked into the bistro after reading the reviews and received a nice dining experience. Very pleasant staff showed us to our table and after searching the menu decided to order the mixed olives and bread for starters, my wife had the duck and I had the riggwelter pie for our mains. Very nice meals indeed and as my wife is coeliac the staff informed us of what could be made gluten free or what was already gluten free on the menu. There were quite a few in the bistro but not all dining at the time we were there. Just as we were about to depart, 2 minibuses arrived full of customers so they were in for a late night as tables had been reserved. Would definitely use again if in the area but booking a table would be a must.
