Captain Baxter has re-opened following a stunning renovation, featuring a lighter, brighter look, with a fully retractable roof over the atrium. Captain Baxter is the perfect spot for a beachside dinner, with a new menu that represents food that people wa
I was longing going back to this restaurant which had made such an impression on me. Well, it is not there anymore. Didn't like the new deco at all, staff was initially rather unfriendly and that started from the first contact on the phone. A sharp contrast to the former team.Wifi was down, the new tables are small and the vibe is just not there anymore. Food was acceptable, some dishes very good even but I remembered something more sophisticated. Great cocktails.Didn't wow me this time.Hi CDFBologna,Thank you for leaving us a review, we appreciate your feedback and any oppurtunity to improve! We are sorry to hear you don't like our renovations as we absolutely love them. We have always remained the same team and pride ourselves on being friendly and helpful over the phone, we apologise that this was your experience. If there was an issue we would like to hear about it, and we hope to host you at Captain Baxter in the future.

Loved the look and the style of this corner cafe/bar. Found the service averagish in terms of friendliness - not amazing. Ordered a salami, haloumi and basil iddy biddy pizza having researched the menu before I arrived. Also had a glass of Grant Burge Merlot, which was delish and in a nice sturdy wine glass. Got myself a window table. Happy. Pizza arrived. As I took my first bite, there was a strange, worrying smell. I couldn't work out what it was, so decided maybe it was that brand of salami. Thought of complaining, but then thought oh, well, maybe in a minute. Kept eating it, the smell reduced or I got used to it, but I now know what it was. it was the smelly wooden board - the dishwater that was used on it probably wasn't clean. It's really unhygeneic, and I don't think I'd eat there again because of this. Creeps me out. The other thing is that there was no basil on my pizza, but rocket instead. I specifically chose it coz I felt in the mood for basil. The haloumi was sparing and in little dry lumps, not succulent at all. But it was cheaper than the wine, and it's a nice scene, so I'd go there again for bevvies, but not food. I love the damaged leather couches and the plethora of pillows. It's all very cosy.

This is the place to go for a big cheat meal! Their menu features a huge range of all sorts of fast food. I am loving their loaded nachos, you're ma boy blue burger as well as their pizza Margherita. The dishes are big, tasty and freshly made. Probably not something for everyday but whenever I crave some dirty food I will come here!

We came to this restaurant for both lunch and dinner. The food was outstanding, especially salmon. The service was very good. There is a second floor bar where you can sit at the balcony and watch busy Auckland Street drinking your favorite drink. They have open fireplace for cold and rainy days downstairs. Loved it and will come back.

Sister site of The Local Taphouse from Sydney, which is already listed on the site but is quite different.
Lovely Saturday arvo with a few beers, ciders and lunch for our first time at Local Taphouse.Impressed by the food and sheer beer varieties, which we enjoyed on the sunny rooftop. Vibe was also nice, the pub seems to attract a nice diverse, respectful mix of clientele of all ages. It was the staff who were pretentious (I’m looking at you guy with the fancy moustache that was too cool to acknowledge or say hello when clearing the tables), female waitstaff when bubbly and friendly though. We’ll be back regardless!Hi Monica, Thanks for taking to time to review us and for your helpful feedback. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the food and beer selection and the vibe of our venue. However, we pride ourselves on delivering great experiences and central to this is friendly and helpful customer service so it's always disappointing to hear when this is not the case. We will definitely take your feedback on board, talk to the staff members involved and use this as an opportunity to improve. We look forward to seeing you back at The Local Taphosue sometime soon.

Very friendly staff offering very good service. Excellent value especially with the ‘free membership ‘ offered online. The servings are as you would expect from a tapas menu; very tasty however we should have requested a bit of a break between each serve. The only disappointment was the plastic straws ☹️Will definitely visit again!

You missed out on a big group booking for not selling a single vegan option other than a bit of lettuce (not a meal FYI). In this day and age, with so many people choosing a plant based diet, it shows a pure lack of skill and awareness to keep up with the times, when a qualified chef can't offer a proper vegan meal.Hi Jane, thank you for your feedback. We are aware that a plant based diet is fast becoming the choice for many people and we can modify a number of dishes on our menu to be vegan friendly. Your feedback has been passed on to our chefs and we hope to host you in the future. If you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact us on 03 8598 9055.

An iconic cafe full of beetle memorabilia serving good Aussie tucker. My Abbey Road breakfast was large and tasty but lacked creativity and our other dishes were ok but not brilliant. The fresh fruit smoothies were good. Service was good and pricing was reasonable.
