A beautiful 16th century pub and restaurant on the Essex/Suffolk border with stunning views of the garden and the River Stour. Offering traditional pub classics in a light and modern restaurant, it is perfect for a pub lunch, celebration or dinner with fr
We visited the Bull on a wet day. The interior was a big surprise, very modern spacious with a pleasant ambiance, Heidi, our waitress, was very friendly and efficient. Not an extensive lunch time menu however this was supplemented with a specials board. The dishes we selected were plentiful and delicious. The restaurant was well frequented, and there were lovely views from the restaurant windows. FYI very large car park adjacent to the pub. A good lunchtime experience..

Came here with a view to booking Mothers Day lunch here and had some drinks at the bar one evening before hand to see if things were much better than when we visited before.. The way the land lord Mick spoke about some types of people. when I was just sitting there. Well I will not return. I found the bar staff not friendly at all. Landlord is a piece of work!Hi Mickydoda,Thanks for your review and feedback which we are always very happy to receive as it helps us focus on improving our service. As a professional landlord of 40 plus years standing, I have always had a golden rule of never discussing my personal opinion of my customers although thankfully, we have a good and regular clientele and very good relations with them, so I not aware of what you could have heard. That said, I do hope you consider visiting us again so that we can ensure that you enjoy not only your visit and the atmosphere in the pub but our lovely new menu, which is being very well received.I can see that you are a prolific contributor to Trip advisor so I will of course take your feedback seriously and consider what we can do to improve our offering. Kind regards, Mike

We've been driving past the Hare and Hounds for about ten years but somehow had never stopped in until last night. We're very glad we did. It's an exceptionally friendly place - my parents and I (with Bella the choc lab) had scarcely stepped in before a local was chatting to us, as a succession of them proceeded to do throughout our meal. I don't know what it is about East Bergholt but it seems to have a well above average quotient of nice people, all of them regulars in the Hare and Hounds it appears! Lovely well-stocked bar (not one but two Woodfordes ales on) and superlative pub food: my chicken jalfrezi was delicious and exactly the right side of hot but without making your eyes water; Mum's penang curry met with equal approval; and Dad was delighted to have the (increasingly rare) chance to enjoy a steak and kidney pud. All excellent value at around a tenner - we look forward to trying the rest of the extensive menu as everything else coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. Add to all that a beautiful, historical interior and you've got the perfect recipe for a proper traditional pub. Absolutely loved it - we'll be back soon.

Lovely place in a great location! The staff were great and I was so impressed by the welcome and how I was shown to my room with all facilities being pointed out and they went the extra mile to make sure I was comfortable. Quite disappointed by the hostess treating people like school pupils, gruff voice orders to do this do that, not a relaxed experience.Fish and chips ok but my stew was cold and parsnip so tough I could not cut, will never go there again. The landlady acted as if it was an exceptional pub, with great food, it is not plus menu is very limited.Best thing is the open fire.

It seems I'm the only one of my friends who hadn't been.Stunning environment (gardens were in full bloom and spectacular) and the food was super tasty; not fancy, just really good.Service was fine - I'd definitely go back and recommend the place.

700 year old beamed pub with large beer garden. Children and dog friendly. Open log fire. Two restaurant areas and bar.
I do like this place and I managed to winkle my dad out of his chair.Unusual soup of celeriac and apple, but dont be put off by the sound, it was actually very nice....Not as good as their stilton and broccoli, but thats really hard to beat.Dad had his ham egg and chips, I had the veggie flan. All in all nice food and good value especially for over 65's.Place was busy as usual, staff were lovely as usual. Hope to bring Dad back here again soon.Hi there, thanks for your lovely review, much appreciated. I totally agree with you, the broccoli & stilton soup is to die for but occasionally the Chef throws his toys out the pram and insists on doing a different soup! Hope to see you again soon (and I will try and persuade the Chef to sort the favourite soup out for you). Many thanks
Where to eat Seafood food in Dedham: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Tucked away in glorious Constable Country, in the village of Dedham, this 16th-century inn was once a clearing house for local wool merchants. Today it is a perfect for a pint, newspaper, sofa, two roaring log fires, as it is for locally sourced extremely
Another foray to what should be the excellent Marlborough in Dedham. The vegetables in the shoulder of lamb dish were luke warm and the parsnip puree was cold. We sent it back. Although we were not charged for the replacement, which was fine, this did not quite make up for yet another disappointment. Last time we visited the Marlborough was for lunch when we sat outside and, from memory, the food was very good. But before that, for an evening meal, we had chosen a curry from the specials board. When the food arrived I commented that some elements were missing. They had forgotten the mango chutney and said the naan bread was not included with the dish. When I pointed out that naan bread was listed on the board we were told it was a mistake! During a visit for dinner last year we had flies to contend with in the restaurant area (see an earlier review) and there were some annoying flies present this time. So overall, our experience at the Marlborough has not been very good. We will not go there again.

In the heart of Dedham, The Sun Inn has been a watering hole for villagers and resting post for travellers for centuries. These days, itâs much the same. An ideal spot to revive yourself be it with a pint of craft beer, a meal using fine East Anglian prod
This is one of my favourite pub restaurants and has been for some time. I love the old building and chilled atmosphere, and the lounge with comfy chairs and settees is a favourite.I took a friend yesterday for an evening meal for his birthday. We both had starters. Mine was crispy eggs which was nice enough. His main was fish and mine sirloin steak. The steak was OK but not great and his was the same, but the veg were fresh and nicely cooked. The puddings were a bit limited too. Service as very good. Overall not too bad an experience but not remarkable
