JJ's Restaurant & Sports Bar

This place is likeable on first impression. And JJs follows through. Parking was good. Greeting was quick. And I was asked about my seating preference; which was accommodated without hesitation at a high top table near the bar. I hoped that it would help me if my proximity to the vodka was good. It didn't help much. Our guy was pretty busy and I was thirsty.I found a good Southwest chicken salad on the menu. Chipotle ranch dressing was real good. Craft beer menu was just what you want and MUST be able to get in this part of the country. We got it, and this was excellent. My man got a Reuben sandwich that was apparently pretty good, cause he tore it up. I got a box for the southwest salad left overs.Long story short, go here if you get the chance. Nice south atlantic homegrown sports bar atmosphere.

If you find yourself in Abingdon, be sure to visit this BBQ joint. The food was fabulous. We had a large party and were seated right away. The first thing you notice is the old school ambiance of the place. The service was great. The food was just delicious. Unfortunately they were out of grit cakes by the time we got there, but all the other sides were good. The baby bakers were loved nearly as much as the ribs and brisket. The sauce bar was plentiful, the meats were delicious. Its on our go to list when we come back to Abingdon. Highly recommend.

Papa Toms Cantina

The hotel and FaceBook recommendations sounded good, so I gave it a try. Unfortunately, my experience did not match the recommendations. Even though the place was relatively empty, the host/ess must have oversat my server because I was not greeted or otherwise noticed for quite some time. After that, the first round came out in a decent amount of time and it was ok enough to order a second round. I wish I hadn't. I waited, and waited, and waited and when it arrived it was cold and the server didn't check in...so I made the best of it. Right about the time I was preparing to leave, I finally saw food and drink runners - why they weren't deployed earlier I don't know. BOH and FOH clearly need to communicate. I also can't recommend this place for families because even though there were a number of children present, two very loud and belligerent men at the bar were screaming and swearing (think f-bombs every other word) and making an awful commotion. The bartender apparently did nothing to get them to use their "inside voices" and clean up their act. Disgusting and disappointing. As to value: for the price most places give you 3 - 4 tacos, I received two very small ones.
