Called in here with several filthy friends after a morning of hard conservation work in a nearby river. The pub is lovely, the staff welcoming (despite our appearance!), the toilets clean and well stocked! A nice surprise. The menu was varied and interesting and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food they ordered. A really lovely lunch was had and very much enjoyed. Highly recommend to everyoneMany thanks for your review. We're used to customers who've been on long walks or had a hard day working so we don't mind how you look! It's always nice to hear that the little extras are appreciated and we really value your feedback on the food. We hope to see you again soon at The Spyway. Thanks again The Spyway team

We took the Father-in-Law away for a weekend break and stumbled upon the best pub in Dorset! Under new management for only two weeks, on our visit, we were staggered by the exceptionally welcoming staff, a wide range of local ales, a super wine list and the food was the best I have ever had in a country pub. It was like a fine dining restaurant, especially the red shrimp and the chef was obviously highly trained and used to operating at a much higher level. The Elm Tree Inn is a family run business and well worth a visit. The village itself is very quiet and there are some lovely walks down to Chesil Beach. Get down there!

The Manor Hotel

It was a very warm day at the start of the summer tourist season. We had arranged to meet friends at The Manor but on our arrival at 11am the place was closed. There were lots of people about, which seemed to me to be lost trade. I went to reception and asked if we could have a cup of tea or coffee in the garden, this was met with a blunt 'no' and that they didn't open until 11.30. I asked again if a simple cup of tea could not be made and again the answer was 'No' although qualified this time with the fact that the coffee machine was not up to temperature! Excuse me, this is a busy hotel, what do guests have? Never mind I said, we would go down the hill to the Club House which was opening and where we enjoyed coffee, bloody Mary's and glasses of champagne and ended up staying for lunch. £200 later I would say to the Manor, that, their lack of foresight was a bit of a silly mistake! Can any business really afford to turn away trade, do you really need a coffee machine to make a pot of Tea? Have you heard of a kettle! I am sure we would have progressed to drinks and lunch, as we enjoyed at the Club House, which I can highy recommend

I visited this lovely cosy pub with my friend who lives in the village. We had dinner which consisted of bread with balsamic and olive oil for dipping and calamari to share as a starter. The calamari was one of the best for a long time, not rubber bands that were tasteless but morsels of the freshest seafood lightly battered with sauce for dipping. Bread was fresh and olive oil tasted of good quality. We followed with crayfish linguine which was exquisite. Lots of delicate tasting fish in a creamy and garlicky sauce which was so plentiful we struggled to finish it all. Wine was also excellent quality and not overpriced. I live in central Dorchester and sadly do not drive so being here was a really treat and if I was nearer I would definitely frequent this pub on a regular basis and get to know the owners and the regulars. It is also dog friendly and the lovely waitress made a fuss of our dog and there was even a biscuit for her! We are planning another visit very soon when we are next due another “girlie night out!”Hi Christine,Thank you for your feedback and kind words. We are so chuffed you all had a lovely time.

We were a large family group and had booked. The staff seemed put out by us and our children! We all wanted meals and drinks, The bill was a pricey one , you would of thought they would of been pleased.Every thing was you can’t sit there , children aren’t allowed on stools near the bar or bikes aren’t allowed in the garden! They kept staring over at us and the children they were playing card games being very well behaved! The food was quite good both food/drink expensive for a country pub. It’s a shame everyone was so rude as we were staying at the local campsite and we are local so wanted to return but we won’t be going to this pub again.

Abbotsbury was heaving with hungry visitors when our walking group spent a pleasant day in the area - but The Swan was not exactly packed. Our arrival for a lunch booking was handled by one- rather bumbling - member of staff who took an age to serve us all, and our pre-ordered lunch took a while to arrive. It’s not the best value menu in the area, and the food was quite ordinary. With such a huge potential market for good food it’s a shame that it’s not being managed to capitalise.

We have eaten here quite a few times and it’s always nice but today our lunch was just fabulous. The menu is really interesting with some old favourites and some new ideas including vegetarian options like grilled haloumi with asparagus salad and falafel burgers. Luckily they had lovely soft gluten free bread available so as I wasn’t really very hungry I ordered smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches with salad. When it arrived it was a huge triple decker with a good 100g of salmon between the layers and a massive salad, really fresh and varied with a delicious light dressing. Husband had a BLT - agin it was a triple stuffed with bacon and he had some thick chips and a decent amount of salad with it. Both these lunches were only £7 each! The staff were very polite and discreet but accommodating, checking we were enjoying our food and even offering to wrap half my sandwich for me to take home as I was too full to finish it. The little touches made it extra nice. Thick quality napkins, sunny conservatory dining, immaculate toilets with free hand lotion, Sanctuary body butter and even a perfume spray. Coffee was also good and every care taken for our comfort- staff even offered to shut the open door to the garden if we felt a draught. Next time we will try dinner here. My advice would be to choose this venue over the other pub in Abbotsbury (also tried) Dogs cannot come into the conservatory but are allowed at the tables in the bar. Highly recommend the Ilchester Arms.
