Things to do in Yea
Great find in Yea near the United petrol station. Went with a group of friends and had lunch. I had the cauliflower and Parmesan soup which came with toast. $10. Delicious and plentiful. Hubby had the magnificent Mediterranean chicken burger which came with chips. $18. He said it was good too. Chips were crispy. Definitely going back.
Arrived on a Tuesday night, just after closing time, but Caroline welcomed my husband in and out he came with two chicken pies (magnificent!), half a chicken (quite delicious) and a drink. Would love to try it next time we travel through Yea. Worth a stop.
Food was great. Environment not so friendly. Lively young lady bringing out the meals, would say though that the woman behind the bar could do with some cheering up. A simple smile would do wonders for making people feel welcome. Although the food was great, a bit pricey for what is essentially a pub meal in a country pub.

I would like to review the restaurant at this hotel please. We visited last week and it was very pleasant. You have the hotel listed but not the restaurant.
My first impression of the Royal Mail Hotel were the brightly coloured Major Mitchell cockatoos with which the artist had taken some artistic licence, clearly.Table 18 was the natural choice for this reason. The four specials for Wednesday lunchtime were clearly shown on the board - steak sandwiches [best to take these apart and not eat the bread!] and braised chicken with Thai-style salad and white rice were chosen.A dessert choice at $9 includes a deep bowl of three scoops of vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. The hot fudge ends up being more like your standard chocolate.A way to eat the rice is to mix the plum sauce and the salad. The rule of thirds is observed in general and can be adapted.A gentleman served the main meal; a lady served the dessert. In between a blue door contains the entryway to the female and male toilets. In the toilets there is a public service advertisement about the barriers on major roads. [It is on the way to Kinglake and Mount Buller and especially relevant in winter where the visibility is not so great].The seating is diverse and covers large groups and their needs well. It also helps people who like or need to be alone and/or intimate with smaller groups with corner seats and window stools and vertical benches. The sports bar is well covered with Hawthorn and North Melbourne guernseys which are signed and a cricket picture. The sports bar was not too full when I saw it.The acoustics are reasonable especially from the back. There were some 30-40 bushwalkers at the time of my visit; as well as an elder family. The outdoor pavement is well-set and the slope to the entry is minimal. The drop is indicated.Quirky elements of the table service include Scrabble salt and pepper and hexagon wires for white tea candles.Cans seem to be the container du jour - I imagine there is a recycling nudge going on or perhaps the glasses were currently unused. There is a great diversity of location for the white; red; sparkling and fortified wines as well as for the ready-mades. One or two are local wines within the Murrundindi wine region - there are Marlborough wines from New Zealand and some from the Mornington Peninsula and Cape Schanck. The drinks are more or less Amatil and Schweppes-type.And one unique drink might be the Little Pig drink which reminds of the nursery rhyme.Another rhyme I think of is the little girl with the curl. When the Royal Mail Hotel is good it is very very good - or I would say that it is excellent at what it does. When it is bad it is mediocre.Table service is unobtrusive if minimally interactive.Other illustrations/graphics include the hotel in oils or acrylics. Both menus for drinks and lunch are well set out in columns. My final impression and the one I leave with is - you get what you pay for and much you do not expect.

Classic Charming Dining experience in a beautifully restored Hotel with the feel of yesteryear. Warm fires and seasonal menu .
We have often passed through Yea, however this time decided to stop for an early dinner. So pleasantly surprised, when we entered and were immediately surrounded by the old world charm of the dining room and bar area. The waitress greeted us warmly as did the log fire in the centre of the room. The dinner and wine menus were quite expansive (for a pub) and our selections were delivered promptly. Can recommend the Thai beef salad and the curried duck; both excellently presented and good portions. The beef in the salad was perfectly cooked and very tender - you could tell that the meat was cooked and then sliced to plate up...excellent. Meal was accompanied by an excellent local shiraz.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we appreciate your feedback :-) glad your enjoyed your dining experience with us :-)
