We were meeting a few people, all of us from out of town and randomly selected Richmond exit on I 70. When the Thai Thara popped up on our search we we skeptical. But it was only a few minutes from the exit so we decided to meet there. Wow! It was perfect for conversation and the food was really good. We tried two curries, two noodle dishes, Tom Yum soup, pot stickers and more. Everything was flavored well with nothing overpowering. I personally found mine to be medium when I wanted Thai hot, but all the others felt that the spicy levels were perfect. Kudos to the owner and Chef. Great place.

This place is in a strip mall next to Richmond's Krogers. But it is also almost the only sit-down restaurant on that side of the city. The menu is pretty extensive, and pretty much original and comprehensive for an American-Japanese restaurant. I ordered the oyster katsu and a rainbow roll. The oysters were surprisingly fresh, and not at all bad. The rainbow roll was poorly assembled and a bit loose, but the ingredients were pretty fresh. The presentation of both was "midwestern," shall we say ... the oysters on iceberg lettuce, and the roll cut unattractively. In sum, both for taste and for presentation, this place is OK, but no better than that. The food quality is better, but not spectacular.

Generally, retro means good - it connotes quality, lasting quality. That is what you have here. Now let me say I did not try the buffet. My wife and I sat down and ordered from the menu. The experience can be described this way: it was like a scene out of a movie. The restaurant itself is a throwback to Chinese food establishments of yore with the right lighting, decorations, and spectacular food quality. While I sat at a booth, I could look out the window at the darkening sky and see the cars rushing home. It was warm inside, but the outside was definitely a chilly scene you would see in mid-November. Mentally, I was transported back to my early twenties and again and could feel the surge of a world doing the right thing in a massive land of opportunity. I felt a part of something greater. And that feeling never went away.
Where to eat Bar food in Richmond: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Had eaten here some time ago but had not been back until last week. We had the buffet which does have a wide variety of items. I had the favorites I usually get at a Chinese restaurant such as General Tso's chicken which was average. We sampled a number of different items and all were good but not memorable. The service was good and the staff were friendly. The cost of the dinner is about what you expect elsewhere. One thing that bugged me was that the signs over the food items were either missing or wrong. You can get a wide variety of food that is good for a reasonable price. Nothing fancy or extraordinary but worth going back at some time in the future.
There was only one review for this restaurant, and it was glowing, so I thought I'd give it a try. Here on business, and the buffet sounded like I'd like it. Well, maybe - if there was a buffet. But they haven't had a buffet in a while, so the choice was eat in - only a half dozen booths, or take out. I should have trusted my gut feelings - when I walked in, the windows were filthy. It looked like someone had tried to clean them, but all they did was smear dirt around in swirly patterns. It looked awful. The floor appeared to not have been vacuumed in a week - t here were bits and pieces of who knows what everywhere. A young woman was waiting for her order with her young son, less than 2 yrs old, who was running around the restaurant bare foot. When she picked him up his feet were literally black from the floor. I should have turned and run, but I was hungry, so I ordered a simple meal to go - an egg roll, hot and sour soup. and sweet and sour shrimp. There was a bit of a language barrier, but I pointed to the menu items I wanted and she understood. No smile. No welcoming gestures. Some shouting in the kitchen behind her, although I didn't understand the language. The egg roll was ok. The soup was greasy/oily and I got through half of it before I quit. It really didn't taste like any hot and sour soup I'd ever had before - it seemed to have a beef broth base, and there wasn't much of a sour taste, and not hot in any way. The sweet and sour shrimp was so heavily breaded that I peeled most of the breading off so I could find the shrimp. I threw out all the extra breading. But don't most sweet and sour dishes have tomato, onion and green peppers? Not this one - not a single vegetable. Just breading with a small shrimp, with the typical canned red sweet sauce on the side. The price wasn't expensive - it all came to around $10. But I'd gladly pay more for good Chinese food. Don't go here if you like Chinese food.
