I seem to be out of step with other reviewers. However, although I liked the ambience and appreciated the friendly and attentive service, the food itself was wanting. Negative examples are weak tasting miso soup, fairly old and dry raw fish on the sushi, overcooked vegetables, hibachi fillet steak arrived cold on unheated plates (however the shrimp and scallop hibachi was fine). The prices of most menu items were extremely reasonable for Japanese style food. Actually this restaurant is operated by Chinese staff which explains the lack of authenticity. Nevertheless it's no doubt the best Asian food to be found in Northfield MN,

We continue to love Northfield's first Chinese restaurant. The Mandarin Garden is famous for their sesame chicken, their fried noodles, their sweet and sour chicken as well as their soups. The Chinese steamed buns are a deep pleasure, and everyone loves the cheese wontons. A sweet social pleasure of the place is the owner, Pai Yang, and you are fortunate when greeted by her on many evenings. Her customers become her friends, and she has experienced the pleasures of the educational life in Northfield. With the growth of the number of Chinese students in Northfield's colleges, the Mandarin Garden now has a special Chinese menu for students and those who have visited and fallen in love with China.
