A simple, family restaurant - owner-run. Way off the beaten path in the section of Northampton known as Baystate Village, this is a delicious option for oriental food. Our waitress was prompt, helpful and friendly. The menu is quite extensive for a small place. Once we ordered, food came fast and was really delicious.

Arguably the best Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten at. The hot & sour soup is absolutely the best. Their dishes using local seasonal greens are incredible, and the scallion pancake appetizer is delicious...but by far, the best dish I've had here, and by extension at any Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten at, is the savory aromatic roasted chicken. Not fried, but as tasty and juicy as any fried chicken I've ever had. Try it.

I love everything about this restaurant and am so happy they opened another one of their restaurants in Northampton (the other is in Amherst). I didn't think anyone could top Zen (now closed) in this location but i was wrong. Huge, extensive menu of delicious offerings, this place is usually full. I noticed that many of the Asian Smith students like to dine here so I know the food must taste good enough to be familiar. I love their braised chicken (served in it's own small wok), their dim sum is great (try the pork shumai), and their dumplings are to die for. Every time I bring guests here, they are impressed. If your friends don't want traditional Chinese, the sushi is delicious. My only complaint, the staff can be a little too efficient if it's not busy and you get the sense they are hovering over you-- waiting to take the plates away or bring the check.

Vegan Palate

Reviewed By Veganvet

My expectations for this restaurant were not very high. Lots of Chinese restaurants do vegetarian and vegan dishes, and most do them badly, with grease drowning overcooked vegetables. Some of them even add chicken stock to make things 'taste better', which nauseates most of us vegans. Upon entering, I could tell I was going to be in for a pleasant surprise. The nondescript building houses two restaurants, and the one fronting the road is called Sakura, which offers conventional (non-vegan) Chinese buffet. The entrance to Vegan Palate is around back. They have separate kitchens, which is important for those concerned with cross contamination. There is a very nice bar, along with several well appointed tables. I was impressed with the attention to detail: the flower arrangement and lit candle on each table, as well as the placemats that match the restaurants' color scheme. Seating is very comfortable, with pillows provided for extra cushion if you need them. Lighting is subdued, but sufficient for reading the menu. Perfect atmosphere for a date, or a large dining party. Before I list what I ordered, let me say that on this particular day I had done a 5 hour hike, but had nothing to eat until I got to Vegan Palate around 4:30. I would never order this much food normally, but I figured I could take home what I couldn't finish.I started with the Hot & Sour soup ($4), which was served with a generous cutting of fresh cilantro floating on the surface along with very finely sliced tofu. The soup arrived piping hot, with just the right amount of spice. I could tell that the soup wasn't heated in a microwave. Wonderful flavors all around, but warn your server if you don't like cilantro! Along with the soup, I had the Crispy Watercress & Soy Cheese wontons with mango sauce ($5). Although fried, of course, there was no greasy mouth feel, and the watercress, when combined with the mango sauce and the crunch of the wonton, was perfect!I ordered two mains. The first to arrive was Jade Mushroom ($12), which is composed of thinly sliced mushrooms marinated in a sweet, spicy sauce, served over a beautiful bed of kale, along with brown rice. Again, this dish had the perfect level of spice, and did not leave me with a greasy feeling at all. The mushrooms were cooked to perfection, just chewy enough while retaining some crispness. Finally, out came the Vegetable Medley Lettuce Wraps with pine nuts ($13). This dish is their interpretation of Mu Shu Pancakes, and it is quite successful as such. with large romaine leaves stacked up for you to make your own rollups. All the vegetables were crisp, and the sauce enhanced their flavors without overpowering them. Both dishes were presented very nicely, with a large sprig of parsley and a fresh purple flower on each plate. As a tribute to the chef, even after eating this much food, I didn't have that typical 'stuffed' feeling you get after eating at many Chinese restaurants. I certainly was full, but I didn't feel 'heavy'. Also, after 8 hours, I still feel satisfied...no 'hungry after one hour' with this type of food.Service was very friendly and efficient, accomplished with a genuine smile. When my waitress asked about dessert, I'm sure she was just going through the motions, as we had joked about me being able to eat all the food when I placed the order. However, I couldn't resist ordering two desserts to go: chocolate peanut-butter cake, and blueberry pancake cake. They were nicely packaged in sturdy to go containers, with a piece of fancy 'lace' paper under each slice. However, I cannot recommend these desserts as they were way too sweet for my palate. I would suggest to the owner that he look into making some raw desserts, using far less, if any sugar. Another drawback is that the location is not convenient for walking from downtown, although I did because I didn't know exactly how far down King St. it was until I found it. At least I burned off more than a few calories on the walk back to town after dinner. This may become my 'go-to' restaurant when I'm in Northampton...it's attitude-free service sets it apart from some other vegan establishments in town. My total before tip came to just under $50.

The staff in here was so friendly, it made for a very pleasant experience. I had the coconut curry noodles, there was very little chicken in it, bit it was incredible otherwise. My friend got the chicken teriyaki noodles and he said it was great. They had a great selection of drinks and the food came out quickly. Love this place!

I was visiting my daughter who loves this place and it has a quirky charming ambiance, especially when you sit in the enclosed deck... kind of like a treehouse. The food, however, disappointed me. Our server didn't speak much English and the menu didn't clarify so maybe it was what we ordered but I wasn't impressed. I am a huge fan of Thai, Chinese, sushi, you name it, but this didn't do it for me.

If you want a great meal, especially before heading south on Amtrak's Vermonter to New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington, DC, then the Bombay Royale is an excellent choice. My wife and I, who now live in southwestern New Hampshire, had planned a day trip on a weekday to Northampton, starting with a good Indian buffet. We found such a place at this restaurant. We arrived a few minutes after it opened (Noon), and a line for the buffet had already formed. There were plenty of meat (such as chicken and goat) and vegetable (such as spinach paneer, string beans, eggplant) dishes. We also took the raita and the two desserts (carrot and kheer). The Indian tomato soup was delicious and not too spicy. We also ordered mango lassis, which were very tasty. The service was good, and the decor satisfactory.Because the food at the restaurant is so much better than standard train fare, rail travelers could get carry out and take it with them to the station, which is only one half mile away.

Certainly as advertised. If you are addicted to red meat you may want to look elsewhere as fish, seafood and vegetarian dishes make up the menu. Service was friendly - without being intrusive - and very knowledgeable. The menu is complimented by a very reasonable wine list. Still in business after more than two decades, Paul & Elizabeth's must be doing something right.
