Serving Cantonese, Szechuan and Mandarin Chinese favorites for over 30 years, the House of Tang continues its tradition of serving fine lunches and dinners, including buffet, seven days a week in Montpelier, VT.
I returned here for buffet lunch, against my better judgment. The room is still drab and uninviting. Sort of an amateur operation, run on the cheap. My son likes it here, all the same. The buffet, though, is horrible. The chaffing dishes are half full at best, others are near empty. The selection is limited. The food itself is unappetizing because it has dried out while on the steam table and has turned into a congealed mess. The "Chinese" noodle dishes are obviously made with cheap spaghetti and lack any pretense of having been stir fried in a wok. The flavor is bland, heavy on celery, with wet, limpid noodles. Just awful to see and eat. The kitchen personnel occasionally came out to stir the dishes around-- they weren't wearing latex gloves or hair nets. The staff would scoop up food into a pot and the disappear into a back room, leaving me wondering what was going on? Reheating food? The House of Tang just doesn't seem to have very high standards of cleanliness or professional operation. The wait staff was pleasant enough, but not very skilled-- the manager, a woman, was rude when I checked out. I'd suggest going elsewhere if you're in the mood for Chinese buffet food.

Walking through downtown Montpelier looking for a place to have a quick lunch. China Star is built like a typical Chinese take-out restaurant but they have plentiful room for you to eat in or take out. The food was great and they serve you and clean up after you. Our lunch for two was $12 for two plates with shrimp, rice, vegetables and sauce. Hot tea is included as well as tap water. Amazing!

Very informal setting..order at the counter. Family run and very friendly. Ordered a curry dish and it came out quickly. It was not too spicy and it tasted fresh. Great place for lunch or take out.

My oldest daughter, recommended this place, hard by the Vermont State Capital Building and in an historic, 1827, red-brick, house. We all had the house specialty, pho (a sort of Viet Names soup dish, usually with fish or meat, with vegetables and noodles, sometime without meat or fish), and were very satisfied with our meals. The prices were VERY reasonable (none of our meals was over $8 to $10, including non-alcoholic beverage. The service was very attentive. A testimonial as to their popularity was that, by the time we finished our meals, the place was jammed. Word gets out! For the four of us (oldest daughter, who lives in Montpelier, youngest daughter, who lives in Burlington, and her bf) the bill came to just a tad over $56 when I was prepared--or at least expecting--to pay $100 or more! This is a place my friend Dan (R.I.P. 1937-2017), who lived in Viet Nam from 1968 to 1975, and who visited there many times in the 1990's until a year before he passed) would have loved. I hope to revisit Pho Capital again and again

We hadnât been here for a while, so we gave this place another try. It was disappointing, and no better than our previous visits. The same cramped, slightly drab interior. Inattentive service from the overwhelmed, rushed waitress. We shared a kind of gloppy curry that was spicy hot but had no richness or complexity of flavor. Our appetizers were sort of a fried spring that came with a tiny dish of flavorless dipping sauce as well as a chicken dumpling that was undercooked and flavorless. The bill for this not very satisfying meal was on the high side. I canât recommend this place and wonât be back.

A co-worker suggested I go - so glad I did! My husband loves Thai - he said the taste was superior to Royal Orchid (the other local Thai restaurant in Montpelier). They do have a limited menu so I stopped at Wilaiwan's and then on to the Royal Orchid to pick up my daughters fav. Thai dish. Two men were working and they both interacted w/ their customers. I only had rolled quarters for cash, but they took it without a worry so I didn't have to walk to the ATM machine. As one customer was leaving the small sit down area he yelled back to the chef, "great food again!"... chef smiled and waved!!! LOVE IT!!!Great food, flexible owners (who pays in quarters???? - me!) and they even made the food a bit hotter for my husband. Love the guys and the food!!!!
