We really enjoyed our Chicken Nanban over rice at this restaurant. They had a great drink menu, the air conditioning was perfect (hot day in Fukushima), and we really enjoyed the appetizer that was served as part of the table service fee. It was some type of eggplant spread that was served with Japanese cucumbers. They served a very nice selection of salads. We also enjoyed a cool sake drink. It was very satisfying after a very long day.
What to do and see in Fukushima, Japan: The Best Places and Tips

This place was a favorite of the professor who recruited me to Japan, so we went to Gyoza Kaikan in the first weeks of my life in Fukushima. I've been coming back ever since. Gyoza dumplings, ramen noodle bowls, and various side dishes are a labor of love for the long-married couple who work behind the counter. Twelve seats around this L-shaped counter provide slightly different views of their food prep - including hand-made gyoza dough being cut, rolled, and filled as you watch. Some other online reviews have suggested that the proprietors are not so friendly. That's a misinterpretation. True, they are not chatty, but we can attribute this to their focus on preparing and serving delicious food and drink. I marvel at how these two can synchronize their efforts and hand off tasks without needing any words. And, yes, in quiet times when some of the seats are vacant, we've had some friendly conversations in which they indulge my grammatically awkward Japanese. The time between ordering and eating might be a little longer in a full house versus quieter moments when there are some empty seats, but you can always count on prompt service. Still, there is no need to rush through your meal. Yes, Gyoza Kaikan is a good place for a quick bite, but it is also where you can linger with friends or family. Of course I'll voluntarily hasten my own departure if, say, a party of three arrives and there are just two open seats. I'm also glad to move to another seat so new arrivals can sit together. This is not required or even expected, but among Fukushima residents, hospitality is everyone's job. So, to visitors: enjoy Fukushima, and enjoy Gyoza Kaikan.

Recommend to go before 6pm because they may turn you away if they are running low on ingredients. The gyouza dumplings are famous and the minimum amount is 20 fried dumplings or 20 dumplings in broth. They are delicious but that is about the only thing on the menu.
