We came on Mother's Day and although it was busy we were seated very quickly. Our waitress Brandi was excellent, quick, and anticipated our needs (soda refills, etc). They had a buffet which had my mom had and said was very fresh and hot. I had an omelette which was great. The workers were really running around working hard. Giving it 5 stars for what it is-a diner. Don't expect gourmet food but well prepared diner style food and you will be satisfied!

A questionable visit. Since our review, we had been making it a semi-regular place to have lunch on Tuesdays but had never tried out their Friday Fish Fries, so last week we decided to stop in and see if their fish were as good as their sandwiches. And so, we did. Naturally, there was a pretty decent sized crowd when we arrived, it being 5:30 in the afternoon and all but we sat down at an open table and waited for someone to take our orders. The bartender-a middle aged woman whom we had met there before-was also doing the order taking and we sat trying to catch her eye as she went back and forth serving bar drinks. No such luck. Other people came in while we were waiting, and she immediately greeted them and served them drinks, but, again, no luck for us. Finally, after abit over 20 minutes, we decided that the bar was just too busy and figured that we might as well head out and try it again another time-maybe earlier next time? We had proceeded, maybe, half way to the door when the bartender suddenly called out "I'm serving drinks! You'll have to wait until I'm through here!", to which we simply continued on to the door and told her as we left. "That's okey-you're busy. We need to get going." The next Tuesday, we again stopped by for the Lunch special but when we entered, there was no cheerful greeting. The bartender, a middle aged man whom we had always found to be friendly and talkative, came up to us scowling. When we attempted small talk, he was terse and uncommunicative. Other patrons inside were looking sourly in our direction as well. When we requested a menu, he returned with one and set it in front of us and slammed a napkin holder down on the bar loud enough to make my wife be startled. We placed our order and as he walked sullenly away, he half turned over his shoulder and said loudly "You caused quite the ruckus here Friday, hey?" This surprised the both of us, but we said nothing further to antagonize the man, who was also doing the cooking. Soon he brought out our orders and set them on the bar in front of us and stalked away back down to the farthest point at the bar where he could be away from us. At this point, I was beginning to feel embarrassed at the atmosphere and the treatment, but proceeded to eat anyway. My sandwich was distinctly burnt in taste-something I had never experienced there ever before-but my wife's order was okey. Clearly, I seem to have committed some sort of taboo and was being treated accordingly. Our good mood melted quickly away and we decided to leave without even finishing. The bartender said nothing as we left. On the way home, my wife and I discussed the incident and decided that despite the previously good food we had gotten there that we would not be returning again. Such behavior was both wrong and embarrassingly out of order on their part. Extremely unprofessional.

My husband and I are fans of diners and down-home non-chain eateries, and we're not at all hard to please. Service was curt - they sat us (in an empty restaurant) right by the kitchen door - and non-existent when we were looking for the check. Food was unremarkable, my husband had breakfast and I had a simple sandwich. All in all there would be a lot they could do to earn the reviews we saw online.

We sat at the bar place was packed. Bartender immediately came over. So many beers to pick from and decent wine also. We shared a pretzel that had a great beer cheese dip. Burgers were excellent and cooked to our temperature. Everything looked tasty. It’s very loud as it’s a sports bar.

My wife and my 93-year old Mom joined me for lunch at Spiros. The food was delicious, we just did not challenge the kitchen staff too much. Half-sandwich and soup, plus a couple beverages. My tuna melt was very good, the girls loved the french onion soup, but the tomato bisque was the best. Food a little slow coming to us, but we were first seating of the day. Would love to try dinner sometime.

Mike's On Main

Reviewed By Ray S

My wife's Norway family had a memorial service for a recently passed uncle/brother. The family then had a pre-ordered luncheon at Mike's. Very pleasant and helpful wait staff. The luncheon was roast chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, cooked carrots, stuffing and beverage. Rolls and bread sticks on each table. There was also a salad bar. The food was OK--not gourmet, but tasty and generously served. The salad bar was a disaster. Supposedly prepared for about 20 of us (many of the family didn't even know that there WAS a salad bar, until someone asked, and were told it was in a different room), there was enough salad for maybe 10 of us. It was obviously a very last-moment preparation. And it was sparse as far as selection, as well. Iceberg lettuce (which is a particular turnoff for me), miniscule amounts of sliced tomatoes, chopped onions, cucumbers, croutons, shredded cheese and a couple of very forgettable dressings. The best thing about the meal was the homemade and very delicious chicken rice soup that a number of us ordered as a side. That saved the day. I'll be back, but with a sense of caution. Do the same if you go.

Thirsty Whale

Reviewed By WilliamGriffith

Well...3 years have passed since my last review of the Thirsty Whale and, sadly, this will in all likelihood be my last. Today, the city of Norway had a city-wide rummage sale and the town was overwhelmed with bargain hunters on the streets. My wife was, once again, sick and not feeling like attempting to make dinner, so, much to my misgivings, she asked me to call in for something local and wanted me to drive over and pick it up, and so I did. I phoned in an order of Fish Tacos and a plain Burger and Fries and was told that it would be about 20 minutes time. And, so I waited for 15 minutes and drove on over to get it. So far, so good, but this would not last. Naturally, the 1st thing that I noticed was the crowded parking lot and the large group of loud drunks standing smoking cigarettes on the front porch. I gave them no mind and got out and walked up the stairs to the door. Immediately, a tall bearded drunk stepped in front of me and asked me a question. Unfortunately, he was sloshed to the point of where I had no clue as to what he was asking me, so he repeated the question, and again, it was slurred into incomprehensibility. So, rather than ask him for a three peat, I just shook my head and said "No" and went inside to get our dinner. The bar was packed, of course, but I stepped up to the corner that was unoccupied to flag down the bartender-a young scowling dark haired man and was trying to tell him what I had come for, but before he could fully reply, the bearded drunk guy came in the door and said loudly "You can't sit there-you're too close to us. We're sitting here.",apparently referring to the others in the group with him. I turned and looked at him and said "No problem-I'm just picking up a go order", when the bartender finally managed to say a full uninterrupted sentence to me-which was, basically, "Go down to the end of the bar and tell the ladies by the grill what you want." His tone wasn't friendly or sociable and I got the impression that he was having a bad day, so I simply did as he suggested and walked down to the grill end of the bar. Once there, I squeezed myself through the crowd at the kitchen end and caught the attention of the 2 women running it. "I've got an order to go?" I told one, to which she replied "Uhh...right after you called, we got a Big order in, so it will be another 20-30 minutes." meaning, apparently, that they had not even started the order I had called in nearly a half hour before. With a sick wife waiting, I decided at that point to just deep six the whole thing and told them to just cancel, as I certainly didn't feel like packing myself into the wall to wall crowd of unruly drunks and lean on my cane waiting for another half an hour, and so I left. Needless to say, I was quite dismayed by the treatment and silently removed The Thirsty Whale from our list of any future business, despite being a retired and disabled local businessman who had been patronizing their establishment for more decades than I care to remember. Very disappointing, but, as the title reads, things do, indeed, change over time and considering the crowded condition of the place, it probably should have been expected.
