After all of the great reviews, we went out of our way to stop for lunch and a brew after hiking. Boy, were we disappointed! The "restaurant" was a taco food truck out in the parking lot, and out of the list of brews, there were three available. We ended up leaving, and driving to the Peddlin' Pig tavern in Boone, N.C. Much better!!

Hungry for brunch the four of us stopped (wish we hadn’t) to check out this place. My friends just moved to the area so this was a trial run. When we walked in it took awhile to get acknowledged and 20 minutes total to finally get seated at the empty table. The long line at the cash register should have been a tip-off that things are badly run. We even saw someone just put his money on the counter and leave because even with a line the cash register was not being manned. It took close to 90 minutes to get some mediocre food. The person at the cash register (owner?) even gave us lip when we asked where our food was.I am not going to waste anymore of your or my time on this review - you have been warned!Mr.Jkrarunner, I do know who you are, this happened last Friday. First of all u did not wait 20 Min. to be acknowledged at the door.Yes you may have waited a few mins. to be seated, we were very busy. You are right, the line at the cash register SHOULD have told you something, we were BUSY and must be doing something right. When you saw a line at a register, anyone would know that it was going to take a little time to clean and set up the tables again. The person you saw put his money down was someone who comes in all the time and does this, he knew what he owed. As far as the person at the register goes that was me SHARON H.PETERS owner. 39 years as owner, must be doing something right!!!! You Did not ask me about the food, you came to the register(you were sitting right beside it) and ask me how much you owed for 4 drinks you were leaving that you had waited 1 hour and 5 min, I said I was sorry that we were very busy, you said to me and I quote " someone should have told me you were busy" Really, we usually don't tell people we are BUSY that is something most people would know right off the bat. You were sitting at a place were you could see 3/4 of the Restaurant, EVERY seat taken.Your order was taken at 12:25, you got your food at 1:00 ,u told Deb that you counted from the time u walked in the door that does't count. Why didn't u start counting from the time u left Banner Elk.I have so many good local and tourist customers that we love and they love us, U also stated u were Local, not No one born and raised in Avery county would have acted the way you did. Please do me and my STAFF a favor don't come back, there are too many good customers that will gladly take your seat

This was our best dinning experience in a while and definitely the best restaurant in the greater Banner Elk area. We started with salted beats and fresh greens salad appetizers. Plating was artistic and both dishes delivered explosion of flavors. We ended up ordered salmon and duck for entrees. Duck was unusually flavorful and crispy. Salmon had nice crisp on outside, yet was amazingly flaky and buttery. Food portions were moderate, enough to enjoy the food without belly aching. My wife had a nice glass of Pinot noir. The service was extremely professional, yet very friendly. Valet parking was a nice touch. This place is must experience for every “foody”. We will be back.

I'll have to say that we enjoyed our dining here a lot. The atmosphere is nice and despite what we had read, the vast majority of people were dressed quite casually. It didn't feel like an upscale, up Market restaurant that we were out of class in. Our server, Heather, really made the meal exceptional. She was friendly, very professional, made recommendations when asked and make sure that the meal flowed perfectly. Each course from the James River oysters to the roasted beetroot and feta salad, to the prime rib was presented well, had great blendings of flavors, and the right proportion. We ended the meal with a sweet potato pie - a nightly special that was a creation of the chef. Really liked it as it was not overly sweet and not overly heavy, but the perfect ending to the meal.Thank you for your recent visit and your kind words. We look forward to serving you again in the near future.

This place has been around forever! That’s one tip that it’s great but also a little pricey! Love love chicken filet with coleslaw onions and cheese! Don’t knock it until you try it! They do hand batter all fried chicken products! Subs are also great the veggie sub, cb sub along with pizza sub the ones that I have tried! Several teenagers that want to have phone in hand is irritating (which when you work in public phones should not be allowed in my opinion) but hey everybody has one!Carla, thank you so much for taking the time to review our cafe. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the chicken filet as well as some of our subs. We truly appreciate all feed back, good and bad. We are in complete agreement with you, in that phones should not be out when one is at work! We will definitely use this feed back to review our phone policy once again with our employees.Thank you for sharing your experience with us and we hope to serve you again in the near future!Sincerely, Rick and Kim Blackburnowners

Old Hampton Store and BBQ

Reviewed By buzzy1951

We stumbled onto this store when we pulled into Linville looking for a place to eat lunch before heading up Grandfather Mountain. We consulted Tripadvisor and were delighted to discover it's the #1 place to eat in town and we were less than 500 yards away! The store won our hearts the minute we drove up. This is no reproduction. This store will celebrate it's 100th anniversary this month. It's the real deal. We loved the atmosphere. Clean and bright, appropriately decorated inside, but obviously much like it was decades ago, which is a good thing in this case. We were warmly received by the hostess who told us everything we wanted to know about the history of the store and the bbq. You place your order at a counter, sit wherever you want inside or on the front porch, and they bring your food to you. Bty the time we left, every seat inside and out was taken, which tells you something. You can find the menu online. Not real long, but what we had was real good! After you eat, wander over to the building next door to see some of the interesting local crafts, and step out back to see the stage where you can listen to live music at night on the weekend while you eat. There's an old bbq shed out there and an old side building with a big, original "Clabber Girl" metal sign nailed over the door. Like I said, "the real deal." We're glad we went.

Carolina Barbeque

We found ourselves in Newland and decided to try Carolina BBQ. Being from the deep south I am somewhat of a BBQ snob. Without a doubt this place is good enough for competition. I had the small BBQ plate that was enough for two. It was a good combination of inside and outside meat with good bark and a solid smoke ring. You could tell it was prepared with great attention. The sides of potato salad and beans were delicious as well. The owner Dave came by and chatted with us and he and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. Nothing fancy or pricey here just good quality BBQ. We will be back.

Kaye's Kitchen

Reviewed By travelingbillbury

This is a great little restaurant. Most recent visit, I had a wonderful Caribbean pork stew, loaded with chunks of pork and veggies, and just the right amount of jerk spice. The daily special was country-style steak (choice of gravies, which I skipped) with smashed potatoes and green beans. The lunch special was some crazy low price like $7 including iced tea--and it was hearty and tasty. Lemon blueberry cake was fantastic, so moist and melt-in-your-mouth texture.Kaye is a superb hostess and her chef and kitchen crew are impressive. They put out consistently exceptional food that's an unbelievable value. I can't forget the waitstaff...they are all very friendly and efficient. This little dining room gets busy, and the servers shift into overdrive to take care of everyone. They aren't territorial with their tables...it's definitely teamwork oriented in the dining room, in the best possible way.
