We stopped here for lunch. The salad bar was good. Lots to choose from. Pasta salad, potato salad, beets, okra, soup, all of the typical salad bar items. I wasn't impressed with the potato soup. The salad bar is on a wagon. It was a long stretch to get the items from the middle.
La Castaneda is an old Fred Harvey hotel built for the Santa Fe railroad to service passengers. The people who bought La Castaneda a few years ago have taken a complete train wreck (pun intended!) and are making it into a destination hotel. They have the experience...if you have stayed at La Posada in Winslow, AZ, you will know how good it will get. Allen Afeldt and Tina Mion have made a good start, but it is going to get better and better. Our corner room was on the 2nd floor with a very comfortable bed but missing a few amenties (no armoire, poor light for reading at night). We overlook that now for we know just how good it will become..The dining room is not yet open, but the bar with outside porch seating and a lovely fire place, is in full operation with an excellent bar menu, a very capable bar tender and interesting drinks...try the smoky Locomotive! We had a perfectly prepared green chile cheese burger with excellent fries and a lovely summer squash side. Delicious!Las Vegas (NM) is an interesting town with a number of things to do in town and nearby. Check it out at La Castaneda. (If La Castaneda is full, stay at the Plaza, also owned by the same folks and a terrific place to stay.)
Las Vegas is my getaway place. I often meet my oldest friend there and we look forward to breakfast at Olivia's every morning we're in town. We sign our planning emails, "Olivia's!" She's a vegetarian, so the breakfast burrito (no meat, obviously) smothered in green chili is her favorite. I am partial to the huevos rancheros "Christmas" -- i.e., half covered in red chili, half in green. Be careful -- the common wisdom is that green is hotter than red, but at Olivia's the red is *hot* -- and I love hot food. But so flavorful it's totally worth it. And you know those breakfast burritos rock because there are lines of local policeman waiting for their takeaway!

Of all the smart things Plaza Hotel owner Allan Affeldt has done to revive the Harvey House tradition in Las Vegas, maybe the smartest was inviting the folks who run Albuquerque/Bernalillo's best roadside eateries to open up a new branch off the hotel's main lobby. The menu here is more limited than the Range Cafe usual, but the cooking is equally good and the dishes immensely satisfying. We devoured the creamy, tangy elote appetizer, a tantalizing mix of corn and cotija cheese seasoned with a touch of lemon. As a connoisseur of hot chile, the relleno plate did not disappoint -- the chiles themselves were mucho picante but also mucho sabroso. Service was friendly and efficient. Great to have the Range up north in New Mexico.

A small town eatery where friends gather over cold drinks, toast to milestones and retreat to savor a taste of culinary craftsmanship. A local tradition, Dick's Pub & Restaurant serves up contemporary American cuisine with an emphasis on Northern New Mexi
We went for a late dinner at Dicks in the Excalibur. We had walked through on an earlier evening and at that time I was not in the mood for ridicule. This actually is a fun restaurant but you need to be in the mood for smack down and ridicule from waiters and staff. They make hats with funny and rude sayings in them. Prices are a bit steep but the food was good. âNuff said. I believe you are referring to "Dick's Last Resort" located in the "OTHER" Las Vegas----as we are "the ORIGINAL" Las Vegas! Do plan a visit to our restaurant located in the heart of historic downtown Las Vegas, NM.
