The waterfalls, hot springs, and mountain views in Karuizawa make this Japanese town a popular destination for nature lovers. Hike an easy route to the tumbling waters of Shiraito Falls, then head to Kumobaike pond to relax in what legend says is the footprint of a giant. When you tire of the great outdoors, the Kyukaruizawa Ginza shopping district is a wonderful place to spend some time—and some yen.

We've been to this restaurant, actually called "The Cowboy House", in Karuizawa twice now and had great meals both times. The Cowboy House is on the main road, just down from the hot spring resort, and is a good alternative to eating at the restaurant in the resort. The menu is in Japanese and English, and most servers speak English so ordering is easy.Arrive early as there is usually a wait to be seated. The welcome is big, American style, and the wait usually isn't long. This is an American style steak house whose claim to fame is rib-eye steaks (meat imported from America) or tenderloin steaks (meat from Japan) cooked to your order in various serving sizes/weights up to 500 grams. They offer various appetizers such as soup, salads, grilled mushrooms, as well as fish for non-meat eaters. There is also a variety of desserts including a cheesecake, a chocolate chestnut cake and a daily special. The meat comes sizzling on a hot iron grill on top of a bed of bean sprouts, corn, and potato wedges, and is served with two kinds of dipping sauce, a miso based one and a soy sauce based one. Rice is also served as a side dish. We ordered the green salad to share, as well as grilled mushrooms, and we both had the 180 gram tenderloin. Everything was delicious and the meat was appetizing and tender. We've enjoyed our meals at The Cowboy House both times we visited and highly recommend it!

I have to agree with friends who live in Karuizawa. The pancake breakfast is worth getting up early (Cabot Cover opens at 6:30 or 7:00 AM depending on the season) to beat the inevitable crowds at this popular location. The delicious plate filling pancakes come in several variations (plain, blueberry, almond, etc.) and are served with real maple syrup and butter. Delicious coffee is served in a carafe large enough for several cups. That's rare in Japan and quite a treat. The menu and hosts are bilingual and if pancakes aren't your style, then try the Eggs Benedict or an omelet. The atmosphere, really a small house with a large deck, is homey and comfortable with a mixture of Japanese antiques and Americana.

We stopped by at Karuizawa Vegibier for lunch. Like their name which I think has a French word in it âgibierâ which literally means game meat, this restaurantâs staffs are very creative, they have excellent attention to details, the vegetables were very fresh and the cheese fondu which came with cooked vegetables was a delight. The herbal teas were also good. In a very cold Karuizawa, this restaurant was a good stop.
