The Northern Cape (Afrikaans: Noord-Kaap; Tswana: Kapa Bokone) is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies. The southern towns of De Aar and Colesberg, in the Great Karoo, are major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In the northeast, Kuruman is known as a mission station and also for its artesian spring, the Eye of Kuruman. The Orange River flows through the province, forming the borders with the Free State in the southeast and with Namibia to the northwest. The river is also used to irrigate the many vineyards in the arid region near Upington.

we enjoyed a wonderful Lamb Shank on our first night and Bobotie and Chicken pie on our second night. Great wholesome meal served with plenty of vegetables and very reasonably priced wine.
I thoroughly enjoyed time spent at Smidswinkel restaurant. The coffee and wine were both great. The collection of books is an absolute treasure trove. The décor is amazing. The cook Johanna was so interesting to talk to - she had been there for several years and her knowledge of where to find flowers in the area was very good. The smell of the lamb shank cooking and warmth of the fire will always bring back good memories for me

We settled on the veggie burgers which were huge, filling, tasty and cheap. Plenty of options for the meat eaters.Friendly staff and fun decor, would have liked to take some of the vintage enamel home with me.

This is a lovely lodge. We asked to be seated outside at the swimming pool. Lights and candles create a lovely atmosphere. The food is truly delicious and we had excellent service. We will be back.

We had a light dinner here (burgers and snails) food was a bit bland and tasteless for the price. Chef could put some more effort into the food we feel.
