Great location - right by the revolving bridge at the start of the Amanohashidate sand bar and a 5 min walk from the train station. Staff didn’t speak English - but we communicated well enough. Rooms are big and have access to a very nice garden. The food was excellent. Top notch kaiseki cuisine.

There is a feeling of grandeur when you enter the hotel. The shiny decor and the large staircase to the second floor. The common areas are quite nice, like the hashidate restaurant and the baths. The room itself is a bit more mixed. The bathroom is dated and not up to the cleanliness standard. The room is huge and gives a feeling of space overlooking the sea. I did not reserve a room with dinner so I was ordered what was available. The dinner that came with the room looked really good and I was a bit jealous. If one was stuck looking for food in the area, there are vending machines on the ground floor and the gift shop sells food that you can MacGyver together in the casual dining area which has a microwave and hot water. There are signs for ice cream, which is available in the gift shop. There are bicycles available for rent which is the same rate everywhere, no need to shop around unless you have a preference for the type of bicycle. There is a rock garden on the second floor if you want to sit in that atmosphere instead.

Booked a room with an in room onsen. Water was lukewarm and heavily chlorinated. We have been to onsens in the same town and the water makeup didn’t have this chlorination. It felt like we were in a public pool. We had to shower twice before we could get rid of the smell. We also asked them to make it hotter but they said they couldn’t cause all the in room onsens were on the same system so it would take hours to heat up. This was the worst onsen experience we have had in the last 6 years of visiting onsens throughout japan. Booked through hotels.com. There was no option to book dinner. When we arrived we were told there was no more room in the restaurant. There was no in room dining so we had to eat in town. Luckily we had our own car. Staff couldn’t give any recommendations or knew of any other restaurants that served what we were looking for, crab during crab season. This hotel wasn’t cheap, we paid over 33000 yen. It was much older and offered less, no breakfast included, than the other hotel we stayed at in the same town. All around disappointing experience. Would not recommend.

The position of the hotel is very good, 2 minutes from the train station and 5 minutes from the beach. Breakfast is in the nearby "Amanohashidate hotel", and is not too bad. The room is very small, but that's OK if you don't plan to spend too much time in it. The bathroom was very small and unpractical, with the shower just above the sink: if you take a shower, the floor will be wet for the next 24 hours and it will be difficult to brush your teeth! The air conditioning is just above the bed and it's very noisy, even in quiet mode. In addition to the fridge and the bathroom aeration, it was a real concert during the night. Besides, the hotel was half empty on a week day, and still you could hear doors banging and loud noises from the other rooms until very late. The dinner included with the room looked nice, but it was not very good.

Our ryokan is close from the famous Ama-no-Hashidate, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. Our building was designated a tangible cultural asset in 2010. The traditional wooden ryokan offers a unique experience of life in Japan, from traditional hot spring bathing to Wi-Fi access throughout the building.A number of artists and writers have fallen in love with it since its establishment at the end of the 17th century.
Have you ever toured a historic home and wondered what it would be like to stay there? Well this is it. Built in 1690, and still run by 13 generations of family, you may see some wear and tear, but you will also be treated to 13 generations of hospitality (they're currently training the 14th generation). Obviously, not much is original to 1690, but you can see each generations upgrades through the years. I was amused by the early 1970s Japanese bathrooms and lighting and hope they keep it, it's just as much apart of history as the rest of it. After a long day of travel, to get here, we ate a great sushi dinner near by and came back, showered and put on kimonos in this room, well it turned into a total photo shoot, because the room is that cool. Slept great on the mats and woke up and had coffee delivered to the room to while looking at the gardens. We loved it so much, we wanted to stay another night. But they were sold out. This is when Seiichiro, the owner really made a difference. He called someone during an almost sold out weekend and got us another room. We were sad to leave, but will never forget his kindness. Before we left Seiichiro took us on a tour of the hotel to show us the artwork and amazing craftsmanship in the oldest parts of the hotel. This was truly a highlight of entire time in Japan.

We stayed at this Ryokan for three nights on our honey-moon. The place itself it lovely. Classical Japanese rooms, nice Onsen and the option to go to an even nicer option at their sister hotel. You will definitely be able to relax here. While the Ryokan is great by itself, the food is at least as great if not even better. We had a different menu of beautiful and tasteful Japanese food with lots of local flavors every evening. The staff is very kind and provides the best service you can wish for.

Genmyoan Ryokan's exclusive hill-top position overlooks the famous Amanohashidate land bridge, whose unique shape inspired the ancient tale that Amanohashidate is a fallen bridge to heaven. Inside, Genmyoan emanates by-gone elegance through our exceptional attention to traditional detail. Experience a sense of past evoked by service staff in kimono, old artistic treasures on display, and exquisite tea-house craftsmanship. In 1393, the shogun Ashikaga came on a pilgrimage to this hill and was greatly moved by the view. He thereupon suggested the name "Genmyo" for the spot, as it means a feeling beyond the earthly or ordinary. When Genmyoan Ryokan was founded in 1937, the idea came naturally of creating an atmosphere in which one's everyday life and cares could be left behind. The inn has drawn many distinguished guests over its history, from artists and literary figures to the Imperial family. Come experience the serenity of the location, noticed by the shogun so many years ago.
The Ryokan is up a steep uphill brick road. The drop off area was small and narrow. The ryokan is perched at the side of a hill with views of the bay and the famous sandbar, Amanohashidate. First impression was that the ryokan was traditional with some modern touches. Some English was spoken. The Staff welcome you and a kimono clad member looks after you throughout your stay; much like your personal butler. Room Our room was one of two modern rooms at this ryokan. Ours was the larger room - Kongo. There is another smaller room with just the bedroom and bathroom (Nyoi) Our room had a small study, tatami-living room, large bathroom, and a modern bedroom with two single beds and a large couch. The Beds were very comfortable with a thick quilt. Rooms were all air conditioned rooms and the Floor was heated throughout. Room lights were controlled via remote controller (one for bedroom and one for living room). There’s a Nespresso machine and Japanese tea bags, plus an assortment of tea cups, glasses and long-stem wine glasses for red and white wines. A Kettle is provided. Wines and alcohol chargeable, while soft drinks come with the room. WiFi can be received in the room. There’s a Blue-tooth radio speakers and a VCD player. A Flat screen TV is hung on the wall in front of the L-shaped couch; but it features mostly local Japanese stations. Japanese Snacks were brought to our room by staff during the evening tea time. There were Modern touches in the room, including design lamps for bed time reading. Iced Water and torch lights were placed on our bed head at night. The bed-head also had plug points for charging mobile devices. A small toilet is near the bedroom, opposite the walk-in closet (complete with his and hers changing areas). Japanese yukuta are provided if you wish to go to the spa or to wear it to dinner. Dinner and breakfast can either be served in room or at a designated private dining room. Bathroom Our room came with a huge bathroom area. A Narrow entryway /walkway with another toilet on the left, followed by his and hers sinks with three sets of fluffy robes, towels and hand towels and more than enough face towels. Cardboard boxed Bars of soaps, small bottles body gel and body moisturizer are provided around the sink area. In the three drawers, we found various amenities such as “Good Morning” towels, rough wash cloth, toothbrushes, combs, amenity package (Q-tips, facial wipes, shower cap), and shaving kits. The Sink is large, but there’s no stopper if you wish to wash your clothes. A powerful Dyson hair dryer is provided. There’s a Walk-in rain-shower; which is more than a drizzle, less than a deluge. Large bottles of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are provided. In the same space is a large sunken bath already filled with water heated to 50 degrees Celsius. Temperature of tub water can be controlled from controls at the bath room entrance. The Bathroom smells strongly of cedar wood and is totally relaxing. Lying in the bath, watching the windows steam up, one gets easily lost in one’s thoughts. An Outdoor tub is also pre-heated using the electronic controls. We found it very tranquil to lie in the bath and listen to the rain or the trains go clickity-clack down below, or the waves wash in from the bay. Funnily enough, we did not feel cold traipsing out after our shower. The Living room has traditional tatami flooring with a low dining table and chairs. Further towards the window, a pair of low chairs share a low coffee table, and over-look the bay. There’s a small study area with a couple of chairs. Food Snow crab was in season. Our omakase meal featured snow crabs in almost all the dishes. Deliciously done snow crab in sashimi, grilled, cold, and porridge. Service was consistent and kept pace with our speed of consumption. Breakfast is a choice if either Japanese or western. We had Japanese and again, it was well done and there’s more than enough food for us. On our second day, we had Western breakfast, which was smaller in size but was very filling. Service Service was warm and friendly. Our “butler” could speak some English, but wife had picked up Japanese and got to practice. All staff were on the ball. Example was the bell hops. They came out when we arrived to take charge of our bags. Shoes were taken off in the lobby and staff would put it into a room. (Provided Slippers were worn throughout the ryokan.) When we left for the day, and if it was raining, the staff would have umbrellas ready. Shoes were also ready for us, lined up neatly against the step. Service was warm, caring, and genuine. Other information There’s a Small gift shop and a traditional check-in area in the lobby at ground floor. Onsen located downstairs, and a Small gym next to the onsen. If we needed to head to town, a shuttle bus could bring us down. Amanohashidate station is only about 600m from the hotel but the steep slope up and down can be treacherous. We were based here for two nights. We spent a day going out to “Kyoto by the sea” to see the Funaya boathouses. Our rooms were incredible. We loved it lots and were sad to leave after our short stay. Highly recommended for these modern rooms specifically, the warm and genuine service and the delicious food.
