Things to do in Takachiho-cho
This is a cozy sushi restaurant where the owners and staff are all very welcoming. You can sit at the bar or get a room where you sit on the floor. They have English translations of their menu which is very helpful. You can get sushi, sashimi, or even fried chicken - they also have grilled shrimp and clams. We had the sashimi platter, sushi platter, fried chicken and fried tofu - everything was delicious. Definitely recommend if youâre staying in the area.

Where to eat Japanese food in Nanbu-cho: The Best Restaurants and Bars
The wonderful views and beautifully presented vegetarian lunch at Tanohana ç°ã®è±ãalmost make up for the pricy 1650 Yen for the one plate vegetarian lunch. All the ingredients are locally sourced produce and for the non-vegetarian they do serve Takachiho beef as well. If you are a strict vegetarian please be aware they use a fish based dashi stock in some of the dishes, however if you call in advance they are happy to accommodate you by using a konbu dashi instead. A long walk from the main road, it's advisable to go by car, just keep your eyes peeled for the small ç°ã®è± signs along route 7, if you come to Ama Iwato Shrine you have gone too far, turn round and look harder! Tanohana is off a side road that loops off route 7, the last 50m are on an even narrower road that leads to the restaurant - the yellowish beamed building at the top of the hillside. To make life easier we put a visit to Tanohana into an Explore Kumamoto Takachiho tour, which was a great way to see al the sights in a day.

First time I experienced eating somen (noodles) this way. Very interesting. The noodles was served through flowing water in a bamboo (half cut) and the customers will have to catch the flowing somen with their chopsticks.Nice to try this if you're in the area. This restaurant is very closed to the Takachiho gorge. Best to try it after climbing up the mountains after the boat ride from the gorge!

Excellent soba cook and served by an all ladies team. It is a home cook style restaurant and expect to wait a little if the restaurant is small. We'll worth the wait!!!

Had dinner two days in a row in this restaurant during our stay in Takachiho. The restaurant offered steak or DIY BBQ dining. Price was according to the grade of beef you order. Both days we ordered the Loin Steak which was the lowest of the three grades of beef served (I think it was A3). Takachiho is renowned for melt-in-your-mouth high quality beef. Even with the lowest grade, we were already so satisfied that we went back for an encore the next evening. Steak dinner was served as a set dinner including appetizers, salad, rice, dessert and coffee, tea or a soft drink. You can ask for a refill of rice if you want more. Price charged was according to the grade of beef: loin, serloin or filly; and the weight. For each grade, the set dinner started at 150 grams (about 3 or 4 oz) which came in 4 medallions. You can ask for a bigger portion with additional 100 gm increments. For us, 150 gm was quite sufficient. You can order how you want your steak done: rare, medium rare, medium etc. Even with the loin steak, the beef was super-tender and melt in your mouth. The restaurant is quite large and you donât have to wait long. Most of the waiting staff could speak good English. We didnât try the BBQ cook-it-yourself dinner, so canât comment on that. The 150gm Loin Steak set was 3,600 Yen each including tax. A real good bargain, considering the quality of meat. It you always want to try high quality Wagu beef, youâll find Nagomi of good value - even by Japanese or North American standards.
