Categorizing this as a "restaurant" is a bit of a misnomer. The Cheese Shed (or Cheese Cabin, as the English sign says) is actually a farm with several shops attached to it that sell the dairy and produce that the farm produces. "Why would you go to Japan to visit a dairy farm?"This place was not on our list of destinations to hit, at all; however, after being in Japan for a month it became a necessity. As an American couple, my fiancee and I go through at least a gallon of milk a few packages of cheese each week. In Japan however, there was almost no cheese to be found outside of Italian restaurants. Japanese cuisine contains very little dairy. Japan is a lactose intolerant's heaven. Walking into this place, we immediately felt like we were back at home. There's a small restaurant that serves cheesy dishes and ice cream (Warning: No picture menu!) a cabin with free cheese samples, a local produce stand, and all the hard and creamy specialty cheeses you can possibly want. If you're staying in a hotel without a mini fridge, you may want to pass this up. It's also probably not worth the trip from Sendai if you don't have a car; however, if you're a foreigner spending any substantial amount of time in the Miyagi-Zao area, this place is a lifesaver.

The food at Woodpecker is fantastic. It's perfect if you like Japanese food, but nothing too weird. Their desserts are also amazing. And try the ishi-yaki (hot stone bowl) bibimbap (Korean rice dish). Sooooo good.
