Upon entering we could smell old cigarettes but we thought it was just stale from customers who had passed through. We took a seat and then we looked around and there were locals enjoying their lunch and we knew the food would be great. However we then saw cigarette smoke bellowing around the smallish restaurant space and we had to leave. I apologised and said I have asthma but in actual fact cigarette smoke is just rank. Especially in an eating environment. I understand this is a tradition of the venue but as times change something's should too. Disappointed because the food looks great but we just couldn't stay.
First, I'm not positive this is the name of the place that has the great food. But the map had a pin in the right place. To find this restaurant which is right next to Zuiganji Temple, turn right as you leave the temple complex. You should be passing the statue of Enmei Jizo. The restaurant is the very first eating establishment on the right hand side. There were some of those fake foods with English descriptions and I took a gamble on the eel was was very glad I did. They also have a very large list of exotic ice creams. If you are daring, you can try white fish or wasabi ice cream.

Best Sushi on Earth, from the point of view of a spanish guy... It is highly recommended and one must be early enough to find a place. Sitting at the bar is a spectacle. I was there in 2010 and I still remember.
Matsushima Bay-caught oysters are famous. They are served in a variety of ways in Kouha: raw, grilled, broiled, furai, gratin, hitsumabushi-style. A winery in Akiu also makes wine for this small specialty restaurant, and this wine is worth tasting. The lady behind the counter, who prepares the oysters and serves the drinks, is friendly and informative. On the afternoon we had our meal, she offered an amuse-bouche of oysters marinated in extra virgin olive oil and spices. It had such a refreshing taste that we did not hesitate to buy two jars of this appetizer to take home as souvenir. Our meal, with drinks for two persons, costs about 6600Y. Highly recommendable.

We had a wonderful dinner at this excellent fish restaurant. We started with a variety of sashimi, including shrimp and crab. We also tried raw and cooked eel with rice. Then we were served three kinds of grilled fish, including yellowtail, all extremely fresh and perfectly cooked. We had very good miso soup with shrimp for flavoring and cucumber and gourd sushi. For beverages we drank oolong and green tea and very good sake. Everything was very fresh and well prepared and it's a great place to sample new and different kinds of seafood.

Had lunch twice at the Matsushima fish market because the sushi was so great and a good deal! The fish market also had a range of food prepackaged for easy travel and shipping. I was able to find a rare item (i.e., smoked takuan) there which I was so excited to find! To order your food, you can either use the vending machine to order or order your food at the cashier. You will receive a number, and your food will be delivered to the second floor. Someone will shout out your number and you then collect your lunch from them. On the second floor, you can also help yourself to free tea or water, and vending machines are available for additional drinks. You must bus your own table when you're done eating. Be aware that in Japan, trash is separated (e.g., by recyclables, things that can be burned and other trash), so pay attention to various bins. Thank You very much for coming in Matsushima Seafood Market. We will try to maintain the Best Quality & more service to be satisfied all the Guest. We always serve fresh seafood daily. Thank You Very Much,We Hope to see you again. Thank You! By: Matsushima Management Atsushi Ota
