We stayed for two nights at this great hotel in Matsushima. The owners are really welcoming and very kind. We don’t speak Japanese, and the owners were great at communicating with us in English. They were so lovely and told us all about the town & where to eat/what to see etc. The rooms are a good size, and have good amenities- everything you need. There is a Japanese public bath as well, which is lovely. Thankyou so much for a great trip. Sarah & Chris x

Ryokan
I was given a gigantic room, very comfortable. Good breakfast and kind, helpful staff. Matsushima is hillish, but they picked me up from the railway station and drove me back there when I left. f you have no luggage, you reach the hotel in about 10min walking from the seaside. There was something poetic about the room and the view over the bay. I would stay there again. The only negative point: very bad internet connection, and only in the lobby.

This was a last minute booking to one of 3 most beautiful places in Japan, according to most ratings. It is a short drive out of town and is very easy to find. There are only 4 rooms with a nice public bath and 2 co-ed, private baths that can be reserved for 50 min. We were greeted with our name in Romanji on a reader board next to 3 others all in kanji. Our bags were carried upstairs and placed in our room. There is a nice walking trail near by that goes along a bluff and through some woods. There is also a small marina nearby. On the negative side, two railroad tracks are near and the trains can be heard in all rooms. A traditional breakfast and dinner were included and the food was excellent and plentiful. All of the ingredients and fish were fresh with a wide variety of dishes. The town of Matsushima-shi is a 5-10 min drive and is beautiful. A boat ride through the islands is a must. There is a 40 min ride and a 1hour and 20 min ride. We found the shorter to be plenty. There are also several hikes/walks around islands connected by bridge. They are beautiful and easy. In the towns there are plenty of restaurants of all types and many shops. There are also several temples and shrines. This is a great place to stroll. We did, however, find the night life limited. The whole place shuts down. We had to go to the fringes of town just to find an place to have a drink. We will return here.

This is a modern property located away from the main tourist area (roughly 10-15 minute drive away), and tucked in its own alcove, giving it a private and serene vibe. The views from just about anywhere at Sakan Shoan are quite similar... it's the type of view that will calm the nerves and reduce one's blood pressure. It should be pointed out, however, that it does not offer the expansive, panoramic view of the entire bay (with the numerous islands) given that it's located on its own secluded bay. Still, it's definitely a million-dollar view, especially at sunset. We booked the B Type Japanese & Western Corner Room, called "Oimatsu." It had sufficient (but not abundant) space, and featured both a Japanese tatami sitting area as well as a separate bedroom with two Western-style beds. Overall, it's Japanese in decor and furnishings, except for the two beds, giving it the best of both worlds, at least in our view. Meals were served in a private room (but not in our own room), and wonderfully hosted by Ms. Nana Suzuki, who was charming, proactive and meticulous in explaining every detail of each course offering. There were definitely some highlights (including the Abalone), but overall - while we enjoyed the meals - we weren't exactly blown away. That's okay, because we weren't expecting Sakan Shoan to serve as a culinary destination. Still, a bit more ingenuity and creative flair would help enhance the appeal of the kaiseki experience there. The biggest disappointment is in the property's lack of a proper Onsen facility. We knew going in that the rooms there do not come with genuine Onsen baths, but were a tad surprised that a luxury ryokan in this area of Japan was devoid of a (gender-segregated) communal Onsen bath. Mind you, part of this is out of the property's control, but the lack of an Onsen does slightly detract from an otherwise calming experience at Sakan Shoan. Overall, Sakan Shoan is hosted to a very high standard, has good food, nice rooms and a wonderful view. Should we be in the area in the future, we wouldn't hesitate to return to this property.

日帰り入浴で利用しました。露天風呂もありますが、お風呂は決して大きくありません。泉質もよく言えば癖がなく、まあ普通といった感想です。
