Things to do in Carthage
This is a small Mexican cafe near the town square in Carthage. It appears to be a one person operation, though there was a new waitress/cashier on one of my visits. I enjoyed a lunch consisting of three tacos, rice, and beans. The tacos are not the typical crispy corn tortilla type. Rather, they are made of two small corn tortillas that are soft. You can choose the type of meat from hamburger, chicken, or steak. I recommend you have one of each like I did. Monday is taco day and they are a dollar each. With sides of rice and beans the lunch came to five dollars and change. The food is good and service is with a smile. The atmosphere is plain. I've been there three times and will return.
Little cantina in the back of a grocery. A limited but very authentic menu. And simply put, everything is good to great. The prices are right also; tacos and gorditas are $1-$2 each. It's just fantastic food. Fridays are gorditas and tamales (Mexican and Oaxacan). Sat and Sun are tacos and tortas (best tortas we've ever had). They have a seafood tostada all three days that an excellent compliment to the meal (but you better like cilantro and ceviche). Also, we've seen the health inspector eating here on a number of occasions.
I'd driven past this place for a couple of years and never really thought about stopping. One day our 'normal' Mexican eats place was closed and this little place seemed to be beaconing us to stop in.....WE ARE SO HAPPY WE DID! The place is small but there are several places to sit and the people working there were SUPER nice. You order at the counter and you watch the cook custom make your order. The owner was the one who did the cooking and the flavor was out of this world. We ordered tacos de asada and I had not had tacos that authentic and delicious since I was in Mexico! No fountain drinks and no free chips and salsa but the food was worth it. There is a fridge that has bottled sodas and glass bottled sodas from Mexico. There are two TV's in the small place that had two different TV programs on, both in Spanish and both kind of sound. It was fun and added to the ambiance for us, but if someone was easily overstimulated it might be a bit much. There are only a couple of parking spots out front but there is a parking lot behind the place with free parking. Enjoy!!
You go here for the loose meat taco burgers. By the bag. Eaten in the car. The flavor is old school "mom used to make at home" style Americano Mexican; complete with shredded lettuce and shredded cheese. It's a terrific local place and get a side bag of hot tortilla chips to go too. Well worth it!

We stopped at Taco Bell for a late lunch as we were traveling by. What a surprise to find that out of all the Taco Bell restaurants we have visited across the USA the one in Carthage prepared the best, well filled tacos of any! The staff greeted us, was efficient, friendly and helpful! When we are in the Carthage area and want a taco we will stop here!

We have visited El Charro's many times over the years. Historically, they serve a consistent product at a reasonable price. Recently, we were there with other couples on Saturday evening. It was obvious that at busy times, not the best time for visit. Maybe they were understaffed? We were seated promptly, but the place filled up quickly, and over the course of the evening, we had 3-4 different servers. Twice, guests in our party had to get up and go look for someone to help us. Our (alcoholic) drink order was wrong. One of the dinner orders was wrong. The service was so bad, it was almost humerous. We did not have a relaxing, enjoyable evening. There was no apology for the confusion or the order mix-ups. Something was wrong, we'll give the time to fix it before returning.

My friends and I ate dinner here. I had a bean /cheese enchilada due to dental surgery. Average. One had a huge chimichanga. Looked great and she liked it. One had steak. Looked and tasted great she said. Wait staff could use a little help. After the food came he left us alone. Margarita was awful! Hope it was a bad time just then.
