We stopped in for lunch at random on the way from KC to STL. Glad we did. We shared the fried chicken special and a garden salad. Three pieces of chicken perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection which included two sides. We chose a smoked baked potato and green beans. Both sides were very tasty and portions were generous. They also have an extensive selection of homemade pies and cakes. We chose the Chocolate Cream Pie to take home, but could resist taking a bite before getting back on the road. It was excellent, above expectations, a generous portion, for $1.99. This restaurant is right off of I-70. We will definitely visit again on our next trip to KC.
This is a down-home small town cafe that is open daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. I stopped by for lunch on a trip across I-70, and was pleased with what I found. It is a couple of miles off the interstate and is well worth the drive. For lunch I had a simple grilled ham and cheese sandwich that was exceptionally well prepared. The ham slices had been grilled individually before being incorporated into the sandwich, which itself was then prepared and grilled so the bread was buttery, toasty, and perfect and the cheese was melted just right. The accompanying standard restaurant supply fries were crispy and hot. Again, perfectly prepared. I saw a local diner tackling a pork tenderloin sandwich for which the breaded pork tenderloin was the size of a small dinner plate. The atmosphere is simple. The restaurant is on the town's main street, just a block or so from the railroad tracks, and you can park in front on the street. There were lots of locals there during a weekday lunch hour. This is small town Missouri, where restaurants often still allow smoking. In a helpful touch, however, this one has separate rooms for smoking and nonsmoking. If you like well-prepared comfort food in a small town cafe atmosphere, this is a good choice.

Took a retiring business associate out for lunch and decided to drive out of our way to Bates City, BBQ. We placed our order and our food order was assembled quickly. I ordered a burnt ends sandwich, fries and baked beans. I was surprised to see my sandwich put in the microwave to re-heat...was not expecting that. My French fries were cooked to order and the beans were steaming hot. When I sat down to eat, the first thing I noticed was a hair in my burnt ends. I am not too squeamish and simply removed the hair...lost points however. The meat (small serving) was pretty average and lacked big flavor that I associate with burnt ends...perhaps reheating robbed it of some flavor. The fries and beans were piping hot and saved the meal. Definitely not the best effort.
