When we want something healthy, of course we go to Subway. They always have great sub sandwiches. Sometimes theyâre not speedy, but the subs are worth the wait.
I grew up in Northfield. In Oct. 2007, my husband and I were married there. We planned our wedding long-distance, and dealt with three different dining venues: the Contented Cow (a welcome dinner), the Grand (the reception), and the Golf Club (farewell brunch). I'm a professionally trained baker, and many of our wedding guests were cooks, caterers, and just plain appreciators of good food and drink. That was one of the aspects of our wedding that we really cared about. I had high hopes for the Golf Club, because by many accounts it's got the best "event" food in Northfield, and the chef is a graduate of the Cordon Bleu. "Great," I thought, "Here's one detail we don't have to worry about: they're professionals, they're used to handling large crowds, it'll be great." My parents met with the chef, who assured them we'd have a great spread. Basically, the first two meals (at the Cow and the Grand) were fantastic: the owners worked with us so we could design our own menus, bring in our own wine (minimal corkage fee), and I made my own wedding cake. The Golf Club brunch, however, was a debacle. It was so unprofessional. No contract, just a verbal "handshake," which was a huge mistake on our part. We'd called the week before to give the staff our final head count; we arrived to find a few scanty trays of muffins, scones, and doughnuts. Some tired fruit. Discolored, pulpy juice. No hot food, no savory food--bagels, perhaps?--just, as my dad said, a bunch of stuff you could buy at a gas station. And not even enough, at that! The chef wasn't working the event, and when my father called to discuss what went wrong, the chef was very defensive. He made a bunch of excuses: "You know, we're not really a restaurant. We're a golf course." (Then why say you can host events? And the American Club in Kohler, WI is a golf course--and can blow this place out of the water) and he blamed us for eating too much so the food ran out (not a good customer service tactic). He also said--when told that the few waitstaff we dealt with, when we could find them, were sullen and unhelpful--"Well, you know, it's hard to find good employees...." It didn't spoil our wedding weekend, but it was certainly a bad enough experience for me to want to warn people away!

Service extremely hit or miss. Usually you have to go to the bar to order, but once you've ordered, sometimes a wait staff will come to your table. The food is pretty limited. I agree with another reviewer who said the bread with the artichoke dip should be toasted. Its just a cheap Wonder bread textured baguette sliced up. Ordered nachos the other day, asked them to leave the beef off. You'd think they would take a buck off, at least , for not having the meat on it. Nope. The inside of the place is outdated. This place is extremely popular during the temperate months as its one of only a couple places in town where you can sit outside and view the river (and the parking lot). Now that there are breweries opening in town, seems their beer prices went down a buck. This is the standard case of a place that could be really excellent but has never had competition. Maybe with more choices now in Northfield, they will rise to the occasion and step up their game.
In a town notorious for short-lived restaurants, we hope this is one that has planted roots and stays. Authentic Mexican food, served quickly, piping hot, and with great care. We were greeted at the door by numerous family members of the restaurant - service was impeccable! My wife and I both had the chicken enchiladas - great flavor, lots of cheese, professionally plated - you couldn't ask for more. Pricing for two of us with no adult beverages was around $30.We are hoping to return soon to try some of their tropical beverages - looks like a solid drink menu and the prices are great.

It's not that the food is bad, because it isn't. It's just that the cool decor hints at a more adventurous, more sophisticated menu and it just isn't here. Go for the atmosphere and the darker interior, but don't expect the food to match.Hello Jim, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience. We appreciate your compliments in regard to our amazing atmosphere, but are disappointed that we did not "wow" you with your food options on this visit. We sincerely would love to have the opportunity to serve you again, Jim. Thank you.

We came here in September and had a really good meal. Came back in October for my boyfriends birthday, and to say the meal was poor would be an understatement. Both of our burger patties were so shriveled up and way over cooked. I ordered the patty melt and it was toast and the cheese wasnât even slightly melted. And they were out of coke?! Worst meal Iâve had out, possibly ever. And to make it worse, I emailed the restaurant privately about our experience and never even received a response. Hello CherylI'm very sincerely sorry you had a unpleasant visit your second time with us. It's been a very long time since we've had a review like this. As we are in the service and hospitality industry, we are accountable for your experience. We have won several awards for our food and our establishment and take that very serious. We hope you will be willing to come back and give us another try. Not sure whete the break down was in our team this visit but we would love another chance to change your mind. As far as the private message, I'm the one who usually receives and will usually immediately respond to each one. I honestly don't remember a message from you. But if I missed it, I truly and personally apologize. We as the Froggy family hope we can try to rectify our position with you and your boyfriend again sometime. Sincerely, Laurie and the Froggy Family

Fielder's Choice is a relatively new addition to the Northfield food scene. It offers a fun atmosphere and good food. We like to share their generous wedge salad and a flatbread. There I a full service bar and a separate dining area. The menu offers soups, salads, sandwiches and flatbreads

This was our first visit with relatives that live in Northfield. The selection of this restaurant did not disappoint us.The counter staff exhibited great patience as we reviewed the menu. They responded to questions and made suggestions. The food was prepared and served at our table in a prompt manner...pipping hot and smelling great. Our family enjoyed the famous burgers and even more famous fried chicken. Both were great and different from other places. This place has its own unique style of preparing and serving the food and the portion sizes and pricing are great as well...try their milk shakes...thick, creamy and delicious.

It had been years since I was at the Ole Store. All spruced up and I think expanded, it still seems to be a major attraction in Northfield. There were 4 of us in our party and we had said that we had to go somewhere afterwards and just wanted to make them aware of the slight time crunch. This was to no avail---after 35-40 minutes, none of us had food and looking around the dining room, no-one else did either except for one table. When I finally caught our waitress' eye, she rather snakily replied that "we are busy." Maybe understaffed but far from overflowing or with a wait line. I was going to ask for a soda but gave up because of the lack of attention. We all had sandwiches---the portions were substantial and the food was very good.
