The proud black “crow castle” of Matsumoto keeps watch over a city that’s rapidly developing into an epicenter of food and culture. Slurp noodles made from local soba or taunt your taste buds with product from the Daio Wasabi Farm. Take a soothing soak in a local hot spring or spend a few minutes in the Timepiece Museum. Classical music fans should consider a visit during the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto, founded by famed conductor Seiji Ozawa.

Stayed two nights here in late February, there seemed to be many guests staying for snowshoe trekking (through the Kama tunnel and beyond) We didn’t come with the right type of boots, so we missed out. Coming by car, we were helpfully advised in advance to hire a 4WD, as the mountain pass (Abō Pass - closed in winter to all but hotel guests and staff) from the main road can get icy. The setting high in the mountains is fabulous. The big windows in the lobby has a fantastic view on a clear day. Our twin room was a lot smaller than we’re used to in a ryokan, but the view of the mountains made up for it. No en-suite shower or bath, but the onsens downstairs were very adequate. I loved the bird feeder next to one of the outside baths - birdwatching and bathing, what joy! (On the downside, the outside onsen wasn’t quite hot enough for me in February on a snowy day). Overall, a good mid-range ryokan catering for hikers and mountain lovers, with decent facilities, meals, and a great view.

We stayed at a number of Ryokans of various price points throughout our honeymoon trip to Japan and this one was such a pleasant surprise. The decor has a throwback 70s-80s vibe that would suit a Wes Anderson film and the attitude is a nice mixture of traditional ryokan hospitality and modern style. The rooms are spacious for ryokans (which, warning to Americans, might feel smaller than western hotels), and the baths are just lovely. We used both the public and private baths, and enjoyed our time in both. If this hotel wanted to rebrand as a quirky, hip spot for young westerners they could, but you get the sense that they enjoy catering to their Japanese clientele and providing an affordable yet luxurious experience. We spent one night at a $600 a night ryokan and the experience between the two was honestly comparable. Furthermore, Matsumoto is a lovely town, and if you want to add a day trip to your Japanese itinerary do yourself a favor and stay at the beautiful Hotel Tamanoyu.

I've been to Ryokan in Japan before but Yumoto Saito topped up my ryokan experience to another level. Service - All the staff was super helpful and friendly. They really did try to help us even a little small request at midnight. Apart from the room, their service would be another reason for me to go back to stay at this place again. I really felt like home. Room - We booked a villa at the Kaizen-sou villa, the same building with public onsens. The room was spacious and clean. We even had our own toilet (which was a relief for us!) The bonus point was we have our own outdoor bath that we can overlook the mountain view by ourselves. I totally recommended staying at the Kaizen-sou villa if you have a chance. There's no wifi in the room. But we wouldn't bother about it that much because we have such a nice view for us to enjoy. Food - Our room was also included dinner and breakfast and they served us at the private dining room. Yes, we felt super VIP! The food was AWESOME. They served with 10+ small plates that fill you up nicely. Onsen - OK, this is the best part of this ryokan. The public outdoor onsens were AMAZING. Imagine it's about 7c and you dip yourself in the hot onsen. Absolutely blessed! This ryokan is also famous for the onsen - it's white water onsen from the Shirahone onsen village. If you still decided whether you should stay at this ryokan, well, from my review I think you probably get the answer!

We had a wonderful stay at this Ryokan. Highly recommended for those who are looking for a quiet ryokan with great onsen. We stayed there with a baby, and they put a trash can for diapers, little kimono, and futon for her. Also, they had baby soap at their private onsen. Onsen felt great and food was good. Would love to go back there when there is more snow on the ground.

I stayed at this Ryokan which is in Utsukushigahara Hot Spring and its about 20 mins cab ride from JR Matsumoto station. They serve wonderful organic Japanese cuisine and Old part of rhokan is 250 year old house moved from Hida Takayama area. They have wifi in the lobby and owner speaks English. It's a wonderful facility and very friendly. I have some pictures if you are interested.
I stayed 2 nights as a base to accessing the Kurobe Alpine Route. I had no clue about onsens so having the English explanation sheet really helped. All toiletries and a lovely robe are provided. The onsen is divided into male and female sections, being nude around randoms is a bit confronting at first but the benefits of the water are amazing, I slept so well afterwards. The one guy speaks really good English, the others a few words only. The only bad thing about this onsen is access by local buses. It takes 30mins to travel from Matsumoto alpico bus terminal across from the train station, and buses are every 30mins. Admittedly, I had to learn how to use the buses at the same time, but some of the drivers are mean. I managed to always just miss timings, miss my stop, feed coins and tickets into all the wrong holes etc. I have added the timetables to this review because I couldn't find this anywhere online.

It is located about 15 minutes car ride from the city. Always wanted to have a traditional Japanese ryokan experience and this was it. Staffs were very friendly and helpful. Checkin was simple and staff showed all the facilities and amenities in the hotel and the room. The onsen was small and basic, nothing to shout about. Due to COVID-19, max 3 people can use the onsen at 1 time. There are private onsen with outdoor bath but it requires reservation and separate charges. Room was traditional Japanese style. It is not easy to go out and about if you don’t have car. So best to prepare supplies before arriving. Breakfast was included in my room package and it was really good. Had a wonderful experience.

A friend organised and planned our trip we were a family of 4 with 2 adults and two teenage kids. Great place to stay as a family and also for a couple! The accommodation was beautiful and the bedding was very comfortable! The onsen was also great very private and not busy we used both public and private. The hospitality was absolutely fantastic very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a great experience although the kids didn’t eat much they still enjoyed the experience. What a great adventure I highly recommend if you want to experience a Ryokan in a quiet peaceful location!

After some wonderful ryokan accommodation experiences during our Japan holiday this was such a disappointment. The location was chosen for us by OKU Japan and is far from the train station and in the suburbs above Matsumoto, so once you get there there is nothing around. We were greeted at reception by the rudest man we met during all our travels in Japan. The traditional room was characterless so we had an onsen bath and went down to the foyer to find something to drink. The man shouted at us that there were no drinks. No tea, no coffee, no beer, no sake; he crossed his arms in front of him and shouted 'no.' There was a machine for coffee which we had difficulty using (all in Japanese and no pictures to help us), and he seemed content to sit at the reception desk and watch us struggle. Dinner posed the same issues; menu only in Japanese. Thankfully with the help of the I-phone app of the waitress and our own app we finally managed to order something. Thanks to this lady for her patience and kindness. Next morning we couldn't wait to get away. The same rude man didn't understand 'taxi' and shouted at us that only cash was accepted. My partner had to ask him to stop yelling. Very inappropriate behaviour. We left with the overall impression that this hotel is for Japanese and does not welcome foreigners. We are widely travelled and more than happy to try to accommodate other culture, customs and languages but this experience left a very bad impression. Thankfully in a two week trip it was the only poor hotel we experienced.

We stayed at Kikunoyu more than 10 years ago and my children loved the place. I was happy to find that my experience (with friends this time) was just as enjoyable as I remembered. The ryokan is located a ways from the center of town, which is both good and bad. It's a taxi ride or a walk to sights such as Matsumoto Castle. On the other hand, the distance from the center of town contributes to the feeling of relaxation and retreat that the ryokan nurtures. The staff was warm and welcoming. The onsens were small but lovely and I usually had the bath to myself. The food was very good and beautifully presented. My son had been planning to join me at the ryokan and was able to make it to one dinner but had to cancel the rest at the last minute due to work. Even though I was not entitled to the refund (and I told them that I was aware of the cancellation policy and was ready to pay the full amount), they still gave me a discount, which I did not expect. I would not call this a luxury ryokan but it is a wonderful traditional ryokan in the best sense of the word.

We had a Koki-iwai Ceremony, the ryokan lent us the cute hat & vest (red for 60 year-olds, purple for 70+ year olds). Our room was really large with 2 full-size beds, a small seating area on the side, and a large tatami area sizeable enough for everyone to get together. My daughter planned The Party, and the staff were great about keeping our plan secret, the timing of our dinner, taking photos, & arranging other bedrooms. Ladies could pick the yukata they wanted to wear (& we laughed because 2 picked the same light-green yukata!) Dinner was kaiseki in a banquet hall just for our party and they put in a table with chairs for us on the tatami! The spring menu was carefully thought out with interesting flavors and textures, all complemented by the local sake! Delicious. The onsen was clean, huge, with 2 different temperatures and an outdoor bath. Relaxion area was nicely appointed with various face/body products to sample. Parking was available & they assisted us. I also liked the mountain tops etched into the window overlapping the western view so you could learn the names of the many mountain tops.
