So if your really craving chinese food. This is as good as it gets around here....no other choices really. It's not awesome....but it's not awful either.....It's what I call a stop gap.

Friendly. Upbeat. Memorable. Mile Zero Pub is known island-wide for its amazing food, and its menu has expanded recently to include fish and chips made with locally-caught halibut and salmon as well as crab dishes when it is seasonally available. People of all ages can indulge in the flavourful fare in the family-friendly dining room, while grownups can enjoy time away from the kids in the pub. Want to grab a few cold ones to take home? Mile Zero has a pub on one side and a quite dinning room on the other with a separate entrance.
I had modest expectations, and this still came up short.
I had the ribs, couldn't find much meat, just a $20 pile of bones, fat and gristle. The chicken dish was better, still mediocre. The service was friendly, but not attentive.
Cheap prices don't make up for the poor quality.

We were hungry and looking for a wholesome breakfast and we found it at the Island Sunrise Cafe. The food quality was excellent and the service equally as exceptional. Don't be fooled by the exterior appearance of this restaurant - inside it's clean and the atmosphere friendly.

Moon Over Naikoon is a fun, off-the-beaten-path bakery housed in a psychedelic bus in between Masset and Tow Hill. If you’re not on the lookout for it, it can be pretty easy to miss (just a small sign on the road, which was being overtaken by bushes when we were driving by. . .in fact, we had to loop back around). This little bakery is a good place to stop en route to the provincial park because, as you might expect, there are no eateries further on down the road. All items are baked fresh daily. On our stop, we grabbed a few baked goods and some cookies (would’ve grabbed some pizza, but they weren’t ready yet). The chocolate chip shortbread cookies were excellent, as was the mini banana loaf. For those not in a rush, and wishing to stick around, there is limited Seating available both outside and inside the bus. Personally, I loved the décor of the bus – felt warm and cozy, not cramped like one might expect.

VALUE: 4.5/5
RECOMMENDATION: The Moon Over Naikoon bakery bus is very much a physical embodiment of its surroundings. Just as the lush Forests of Haida Gwaii house diverse flora and fauna, this little bakery offers a plethora of baked goods and lunch items – much more than one would expect given its compact size. It is ideal for those “on the go” and I think you’d be foolish to pass this one up!

We had a very nice evening at Charters in Masset this month. We understood that the people who run this restaurant used to run the restaurant at Hidden Valley, which was a highlight of our last visit to Haida Gwaii.
We shared the mixed seafood appetizer, which was very good. We also ordered the short ribs, pasta special and local burger.
While we had more memorable meals while in Haida Gwaii, we were glad we came. The restaurant is cozy and warm, the staff is inviting and the atmosphere is lovely.

Highly recommended by two locals as the place to go for great coffee. It was so bad we didn't finish our coffee. The selection of snacks was limited to 2 very sugary pastries.....this was early afternoon! Better coffee at the Kuerig dispenser at the COOP across the street for $2.

Don't be fooled by the name or the outside appearances. This is a great little "50s-style diner".
Decor is all diner style, with brightly painted booths and stools. The menu follows that theme - grilled cheese, burgers, poutine, mac & cheese. All the classics.
We were there for lunch so can't comment on how it might be for dinner

This place is still going strong. The soups are definitely worth the stop. If your visiting try something different you won't regret it. Side note: cash only

Sherri’s Gas Bar & Grill, located in Old Massett, is one of those rare places that is a genuine surprise. From the outside, the place doesn’t look like much; in fact, it looks kind of old and tired with its barred front windows, weathered exterior and metal roof. When I pulled up here for lunch with family they said, “what? We’re having lunch here?” – some disbelief in their voice. Given the restaurant’s exterior you can kind of understand why this question was asked; however, Sherri’s Gas Bar is yet another instance where one should not judge a book by its cover. As soon as you walk through the doors, you witness a stunning transformation: the tired looking gas bar and grill suddenly turns into an epic longhouse, complete with large cedar beams and comfortable Seating. To say this was a surprise would be a bit of an understatement!
The restaurant is clearly well-liked by both tourists and locals. The place was packed during our lunchtime visit, thus offering up a lively atmosphere. For lunch, I ordered the halibut and chips while my aunt ordered a burger. The halibut was a beautiful large portion, cooked to perfection; the fries had a nice crispy exterior and fluffy interior. My aunt’s burger was handmade, seasoned very well and juicy. The food was simply delicious. From its exterior to its interior to its food, Sherri’s Gas Bar & Grill is a place that just keeps on surprising. I would definitely return.

RECOMMENDATION: Sherri’s Gas Bar & Grill offers up excellent local seafood and fine pub-style food at a fair price. Everything is made fresh to order and of amazing quality and taste. Don’t let outside appearances fool you – this place is superb! Highly recommended!

Ah, the Red Dragon! After finally visiting this establishment, I’m not sure I understand the hate this place has received in some reviews? Perhaps some are still lamenting the closure of Pearl’s Dining Room (come on, let’s be honest here! That place was nothing to write home about – near the end, many of my dishes were lukewarm at best and the restaurant was starting to look tired and dirty). That said, Red Dragon is certainly not “Pearl’s reborn” as one person has written; rather, I get the sense that this relatively new eatery is trying to carve out its own identity – and that’s a good thing.
It was nice to see this place take on a new name rather than do what a lot of restaurants seem to do on Haida Gwaii: keep the name of the predecessor, even if the reputation of said predecessor isn’t that great. The signage outside is catchy and clean; however, I cannot help but wonder if the same person who designed the “Red Dragon” sign also designed the “Ocean Star” sign in Queen Charlotte? The font and style of the signage is eerily identical. The interior has been nicely cleaned up. In fact, the clean interior is the first thing I noticed upon entering the Red Dragon. I’m happy that the new owners are taking care of this space. How about the menu? Well, this place is home to your typical Westernized Chinese cuisine and the menu very much reflects that with its mix of Western foods – burgers, wings, salads, fish & chips, etc. – and Chinese foods – eggrolls, chow mein, sweet and sour, etc. In this regard, Red Dragon doesn’t really distinguish itself from any of the other Chinese restaurants on island.
How about the food? Well, when we visited, we had the eggrolls (“everybody’s favourite,” according to the menu); chicken wings; chicken chow mein, fried rice, dry boneless spareribs; and, curried prawns. The eggroll was bit on the greasy side, but it wasn’t as bad as others I’ve tried. The triple plate of chow mein, fried rice and boneless spareribs was OK. I mean, the spareribs were good – cooked properly, but the fried rice and chow mein were quite unremarkable and didn’t have much in the way of flavour. The curried prawn dish had a nice ratio of vegetables to prawns, but the curry sauce looked kind of unappealing and was flirting with blandness. The chicken wings were good. Thus, I’d rate the food at Red Dragon as average. It wasn’t bad, but at the same time wasn’t overly memorable either.
FOOD: 2.5/5
SERVICE: 4/5 (very helpful and attentive server)
VALUE: 2.5/5
RECOMMENDATION: At the end of the day, Red Dragon doesn’t set itself apart from the plethora of other Chinese restaurants on the Islands. They are just one amongst many. Service was good and the food came out quickly. If you’re wishing for (westernized) Chinese, check this place out if you’re in the area, but I stress “if you’re in the area” because it doesn’t merit going out of one’s way.
