Reviews on Middle Eastern food in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, United States. Shrewsbury is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. Shrewsbury, unlike other surrounding towns like Grafton, Millbury, Westborough, and Northborough did not become a mill town or farming village, rather most of its 19th-century growth was due to its proximity to Worcester and visitors to Lake Quinsigamond. Pomir Grill is one of those places we have always wanted to try, but never got there. When friends suggested we meet, we jumped at the chance. Six of us met and enjoyed a leisurely dinner with flavors we never had before. The six of us started by enjoying the naan and mixed sauces served by the staff. The bread was soft, the three sauces (cucumber and yogurt, cilantro and nuts and a sweet tomato sauce - wish they were on the online menu, they were SOOO good). How good was the bread service? We ordered another basket and another round of sauces, even though we had to pay for it.From the appetizer menu, we tried the Kachalu Bolani (pan fried pastry filled with potatoes and leek), which one member of our party compared to a Jewish knish; it went well with the last few drops of the sauce from the bread service. We also ordered the Sambosa (baked pastry filled with beef, chicken or spinach - we opted for the beef). Both appetizers had two per serving, which at $5 an order was a great deal. Both were good, the Sambosa was my favorite. One member of our party ordered the Bamia: okra cooked with tomato, onions, and peppers and served with bread. Even people who didn't think they liked okra liked it, comparing it to stewed Greek green beans with tomatoes, but in a good way.We tried four different entrees: Mantu: Afghan dumpling with a beef filling served with a beef or vegetarian sauce. The dumplings were very tender. He ordered the vegetarian sauce, which added nice spices.Lamb kabob: Tender meat with grilled vegetables.Qouem-e-Gosfand: Lamb cooked in a savory apricot sauce. The meat was fall-apart tender and the spices eliminated any gaminess.Beef sampler: Afghan boneless short ribs on sautéed onions and tomatoes served with an in-house pomegranate sauce (which was a bit on the dry side, but very tender); Kofta, Afghan meatballs cooked in a plum sauce (some of the most tender meatballs I have ever tried); and Kabob-E-Kobeda,ground beef kabob with sautéed onions and tomatoes, which was served dry, but tender and flavorful. Each dish came with rice, either spinach or one mixed with carrots and raisins, which we all preferred. For dessert, we tried the ice cream sampler and Firni, Afghan style egg free pudding with fruit topping (in this case, pears). The ice cream had three flavors, quince, pistachio and fig, each creamy and unique. The pudding was fragrant with cardamon. The hot chai tea got very high marks from the two people who ordered it (and got refills, it was that good). Pomir Grill is BYOB. The pace is very slow, which was fine with us. We had plenty of time to talk, enjoy the food and the company.

Nestled in the chronically un-hip Christmas Tree Shoppes' Plaza, is a delightful Mediterranean restaurant with Shwarma, gyros, and kebabs. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant, although many take out orders were picked up, and friends tell me that it is busier at lunch. Our meals were excellent, but the only reason they didn't have a fifth star is that the Baklava just wasn't very good. It looked. So. Very. Good. But it was such a bummer that it just didn't taste very good..... And FYI, no liquor license.Thank you for the nice review I am so glad you loved our food. We usually very busy on Fridays and probably the reason was the heavy rain you can bring you own liquor.

In todayâs world most of your restaurant meals are pre-portioned and flash frozen. Good for the bottom line, but not for an appreciative palate. NOT so at Basra. Everything I tasted was very fresh and tasted wonderful. On top of that, the place is clean and the staff is friendly and accommodating. My only regret is that this establishment is not closer to where we live. Iâd be here twice a week if we lived near it. Recommended highly.

There is just one thing I am sorry about - I live too far away from Shawarma Palace to eat here regularly. Those of you who live in Worcester or are driving through - stop in!The chicken shawarma plate was the best I have ever had, with considerable attention given to each component. Excellent hummus and baba ganoush, great rice, very tasty salad, and tender, warm chicken. FantasticGo

Ordered here for the first time and food was decent and plentiful. Price was very reasonable. Such a hidden gem in a sketchy looking plaza. I ordered the chicken kebab cubes that came with rice and salad (lettuce/tomato/onions). They also gave me a small container of hot sauce which I didn't use but it definitely cleared up my sinuses and they also gave me tzatziki sauce. I also ordered the tandoori pitta bread. When I called they asked how many I wanted. I assumed since they asked they must've been small so I ordered 2 but they were the size of a normal naan bread so I could've ordered 1. I also asked for a side of the tzatziki sauce (not knowing it came in the platter I ordered). The tzatziki sauce was good but very liquidy compared to the others I've had. And, they don't give you much of it which I'm really happy they didn't charge me the $0.35 because I could've used 2-3 more containers worth of it. I was overall pleasantly surprised as to how delicious my meal was and I definitely will be back again!
